Aston Villa vs Club Brugge predictions
Aston Villa’s return to the Champions League this season after more than 40 years away was cause for considerable celebration in the claret and blue parts of Birmingham.
Yet right from the very start, you could tell Villa were not content to merely make up the numbers. They may have upset the odds by finishing fourth in the Premier League last term, but this is no plucky upstart: Villa have long been one of the biggest clubs in England.
They also have Unai Emery in the dugout. A master in continental competition, the Villa boss has won a record four Europa Leagues. He also guided Villarreal to a Champions League semi-final, where the Yellow Submarine gave Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool a scare.
Villa’s owners are ambitious. In their eyes Champions League qualification was just the start. Whether or not Villa really can challenge for the Premier League title remains to be seen, but they intend to consistently be in and around the top four in the medium term.
They are currently outsiders to qualify for the Champions League via England’s top flight, but Villa are making the absolute most of their participation in this season’s edition.
Emery’s team secured a top-eight finish in the league phase, allowing them to bypass the play-offs and proceed directly to the round of 16. Nothing can be taken for granted in this tournament, but it is accurate to say Villa have one foot in the quarter-finals after their 3-1 victory over Club Brugge in the away leg last week.
Villa were beaten at the Jan Breydel Stadium in the league phase, going down to a 1-0 defeat after a bizarre Tyrone Mings error.
They made amends last time out. Leon Bailey gave Villa an early lead, but Brugge were back on level terms by the 12th minute. The game was ultimately decided late on, as a Brandon Mechele own goal and a Marco Asensio penalty put Villa in a commanding position.
“We will try to build on today’s result, using the foundation we’ve already achieved,” Emery said last week, looking ahead to the return fixture, “With a new game plan, we will try to dominate. They won at Atalanta, we know that. We will try to do better.”

Aston Villa vs Club Brugge betting tips
Aston Villa are strong favourites to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Club Brugge.
Aston Villa to win and both teams to score
As Emery referenced, Club Brugge stunned an excellent Atalanta team in the play-offs, winning both home and away to send the Serie A title contenders packing.
But Aston Villa have given Brugge too much to do. The Belgian outfit may well get on the scoresheet, as they have done in both previous meetings with the Villans, but avoiding defeat will be difficult.

Villa have a fantastic home record this term. Only Liverpool have collected more Premier League points in front of their own supporters than Emery’s men.
Villa also have more quality in their ranks than Brugge, as they showed last week. A clean sheet could be beyond them but Villa should emerge triumphant once again.
Back Aston Villa to win and both teams to score at 21/10 with bet365
Over 2.5 goals
Club Brugge’s best chance of turning this last-16 tie around is by scoring early on and hoping the Villa Park crowd and the home team get nervous.
The situation demands that Brugge take more risks than they usually would in an away game against Aston Villa.
With their high defensive line, Emery’s team are liable to give up big chances when their timing and coordination is slightly off.
At the same time, Villa carry a real threat in the final third. The January additions of Marcus Rashford and Asensio have added depth to the frontline, giving Emery several options off the bench.
It is hard to see this being a low-scoring encounter on Wednesday.

Ollie Watkins to score any time
Emery made it clear from the get-go that he did not think Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran could play together in his system.
That gave Villa a decision to make: which striker should they back as their first-choice starter? Emery and the club chose Watkins – and it is not hard to see why.
Duran is a talented finisher, but he does not offer as much in general play as Watkins, whose mobility and link-up play are invaluable.
The England international knows where the goal is too, having found the back of the net 14 times in all competitions.
Watkins is the obvious choice in the anytime scorer market for Wednesday’s match.
