Atalanta v Celtic predictions
Celtic return to Champions League action on Wednesday evening just three weeks after their 7-1 humiliation at the hands of last season’s runners up Borussia Dortmund in the same competition, and face a similarly tough challenge this week against the current Europa League champions.
Brendan Rodgers’ side have been near-faultless domestically this season, only dropping their first points of the season on the weekend in a thrilling 2-2 draw with fellow table toppers Aberdeen, extending their lead over local rivals Rangers to six points in the process.
The Glasgow side had won nine out of nine in all competitions prior to their visit to Dortmund at the start of the month, including a 5-1 win over Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League opener, but have won just one of their last three matches ahead of their trip to Bergamo on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Atalanta had started the new season with just two wins from their opening eight matches but head into Wednesday’s fixture having won each of their last three games, including a 2-0 win at Venezia on Sunday which lifted them into sixth place.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s side now sit just one point off the top four and the Champions League places, and will be looking to build on the four points they’ve already earned in this season’s Champions League, following their opening draw with Arsenal and a comfortable 3-0 win away against Shakhtar Donetsk three weeks ago.
The Italian side have lost only one of their four matches at home this season, and are strong favourites to extend their current winning streak on Wednesday as they seek a place in the last 16 of the Champions League and aim to keep climbing up the table.
Atalanta v Celtic betting tips
New Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui has really hit the ground running since signing from Genoa in the summer, and currently tops the goal scoring in Italy’s Serie A.
The Argentinian-born Italy international has scored eight goals in as many games for the Bergamo side in the league this season, and has scored six goals in his last four games for club and country, including a hat trick in Atalanta’s last home game against his old club.
The Italian side go into Wednesday’s match as strong favourites but the Scots will be fired up to return home with at least a point and could cause Atalanta a few problems, though the home side will expect to win all three points with a relative degree of comfort.
