Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo predictions

Atletico Madrid will be looking to return to winning ways when they host Celta Vigo on Matchday 24 of the La Liga season.

Last Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Real ensured that Los Blancos didn’t extend their lead at the top of the table over Atletico.

In the end it was Barcelona who benefitted the most from the Madrid stalemate. The Catalans won 4-1 away at Sevilla. As a result, only two points now separate the top three in the table.

The draw still leaves Atletico in a strong position. Their rivals Real Madrid are in the middle of a fixture pile up having to play two extra matches against Manchester City in the Champions League playoffs.

Real may well win their Matchday 24 fixture. But no one knows what cost their fixture congestion is going to have on them later in the season.

Meanwhile, Atletico have had a full week to recover from the Madrid derby and prepare for the visit of Celta Vigo.

Diego Simone’s team have 49 points from their 23 matches. They have won 14, drawn seven and lost just two. Los Rojiblancos have the meanest defense in La Liga with just 15 goals conceded.

Simeone’s team have only picked up five points from their last four matches. Winning home matches against teams like Celta Vigo is non-negotiable if Atletico is to win La Liga.

Celta Vigo haven’t had a great time in La Liga in recent weeks. Claudio Giraldez’s team will start the match week 12th in the table with 28 points from 23 matches.

Los Celestes has picked up just four points from their last five matches. There is some positive news, though, a 3-2 win at home to Real Betis last Saturday ended a four-match winless run.

Goals from Fran Beltran, Javi Rodriguez and an 87th-minute winner from Williot Swedberg saw the Sky Blues come back from 2-0 down to secure a sensational victory over their mid-table rivals.

It was the perfect boost ahead of a daunting trip to take on Atletico.

Atletico Madrid vs Celta Vigo betting tips

Los Rojiblancos have had a full week to prepare for the visit of Los Celestes. Find out if they have made the most of it in our Atletico vs Celta Vigo betting tips:

Atletico to win and over 2.5 goals

Celta have an awful away record in La Liga this season. Claudio Giraldez’s team have won just one game from 11 road trips, drawing two and losing eight.

Furthermore, Los Celestes has conceded 24 goals, more than two a match on the road.

Atletico have a great record at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Diego Simeone’s team have picked up 30 points from a possible 36. They are also unbeaten at home.

Los Rojiblancos aren’t the greatest goalscorers, they have scored just 38 goals in La Liga this season (Real has 51). And the safer bet would be Atletico to win with over 1.5 goals at 4/6.

But given Celta’s appalling away form, along with the need for Atletico to keep winning these sort of matches, I think it’s worth going for the extra goal at the better odds of 23/20.

⚽ Back Atletico Madrid to win and over 2.5 goals at 5/4 with Tote ⚽

2nd half to be highest scoring half

The statistics show that Atletico Madrid have scored more of their goals in the second half than in the first.

So far this season, Atletico has scored 0.52 goals in the first half and 1.13 in the second.

If we are going to assume that Celta can breach the Atletico defense, then it’s worth knowing that the visitors also score the majority of their goals in the second period.

Celta have scored 0.65 of their goals in the first half and 0.83 in the second.

The stats aren’t quite as one-sided as Atletico’s, and Celta’s three second half goals last week will obviously have impacted.

We expect Atletico to dominate this game. So we are happy to wager there will be more goals in the second half than in the first.

Antoine Griezmann to score or assist

Atletico are a team that like to spread the goals around. Their top scorers in La Liga are Antoine Griezmann and Alexander Sørloth with eight goals each, and Julian Alvarez with seven.

All have made contributions in recent weeks, but none have set the world on fire with a run of goals or assists.

Antoine Griezmann has the most goal involvements per match of the trio. In all competitions this season, the Frenchman has 15 goals and six assists in 34 matches for Atletico.

He came off the bench to score the second in the 2-0 win over Mallorca on Matchday 22, and he played the full 90 minutes against Real last Saturday.

In a game that could see Atletico dominate and create plenty of chances, a wager on Griezmann to have a goal involvement looks worth a go.
