Matchday 1: U-19 Girls World Cup Qualifiers
Uganda U-19 v Namibia U-19
Time: 2:50pm (EAT)
Venue: Gahanga 2
The Baby Victoria Pearls will start their World Cup Qualifier campaign against a familiar enemy in Namibia.
Group A games will be played at Gahanga where both sides will be looking to get off to a good start. Namibia defeated Uganda at the last qualifiers in Botswana in the 3rd-place playoff match with both sides very familiar with each other’s style of play.
Uganda had its first training session this morning since arriving in Kigali on Friday. The team is loaded with some useful experience. Captain Jimia Mohammad together with Malisa Ariokot, Akurut Asumin, Lona Anyait, Patricia Timong and Immaculate Nandera have all made the grade and featured for the Victoria Pearls.
Rwanda is not an unfamiliar location as well for them all six of them were part of the team that won the 10th edition of the Kwibuka in June early this year.
There are players who are playing at this level for the first time but could be very useful for the team. The tall lanky Irene Mutonyi has the ability to hurt teams and if she is used very well she will be a match-winner for the team, Gringlish Nabulime is fearless as a batter and if given a chance she can make a good contribution. Mitchelle Ariogo is a tidy spinner and her partnership with Lona Anyait should help with stopping the flow of runs.
Uganda finished fourth two years ago in Botswana but two years later with a well-prepared side, Uganda is certainly one of the favourites of winning that single slot to the World Cup in Malaysia.
