Barcelona will host Leganes in Gameweek 17 of La Liga.
By the time they kick off, they will very likely have been knocked off the La Liga top spot by Real Madrid, who are likely to get three points when they take on Rayo Vallecano 24 hours earlier.
Losing the top spot, even if it is just for 24 hours, will be a blow to the Catalans. They held a substantial lead after they defeated Real Madrid 4-0 in the capital on Matchday 11.
Since that remarkable win, Barca has picked up just eight points from a possible 18 points. Their drop off in form has been alarming.
There have been signs of a revival in recent days. Barcelona are unbeaten in three in all competitions. The run includes a 5-1 win away to Mallorca, followed by a 2-2 draw at Betis last Saturday.
Barcelona then travelled to Germany to face Dortmund in the Champions League, winning 3-2 in a thriller on Wednesday.
Dortmund is unbeaten at home in the Bundesliga all season, so this result cannot be underestimated. And furthermore, it was achieved without a goal from former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.
The Catalans had become a bit too reliant on the pole to score the bulk of their goals, so Barca manager Hansi Flick will be relieved to see Ferran Torres score the brace that won the match for the visitors.
The win in Germany sees Barcelona move up to second in the Champions League table. It virtually assures them of a place in the top eight, allowing Flick to focus his attention fully on the battle to win La Liga over the next few vital weeks.
Leganes are in a whole lot of trouble at the wrong end of the La Liga table. They sit in 17th place, just one position and two points outside of the relegation zone, with 15 points from 16 matches.
In their last five matches they have picked up four points, with one win, one draw and three defeats. Over the course of the season, they have won only three, with six draws and seven losses.
Last weekend Los Pepineros were beaten 3-0 at home by Real Sociedad. The home side managed just two attempts on target in a match they never looked like getting anything out of. It also means in their last three La Liga matches, they have conceded seven while only scoring one.
A return of just 14 goals scored in 17 league matches highlights where the main problem lies for head coach Borja Jimenez. Only the bottom two teams and Getafe have scored less this season.
If Jimenez can’t get Leganes scoring goals, and fast, a relegation dogfight is all that Los Pepineros fans will have to look forward to this season.
