Barcelona vs Osasuna predictions

What a title race we have on our hands in La Liga.

Barcelona established themselves as the team to beat early on after winning 11 of their first 12 matches. But an unexpected downturn, which saw Barca triumph in just one of eight games between mid-November and mid-January, allowed Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid back into the conversation.

Now the situation has changed again. Madrid and Atletico have both stumbled of late, whereas Barcelona are on a six-match winning streak in La Liga. Having previously dropped down to third place, the Catalans are on top again.

It is hard to say they do not deserve to be top. The underlying numbers, chiefly expected goals, indicate that Barcelona have comfortably been the division’s top performers in 2024/25.

Hansi Flick’s side have been particularly good going forward. They have scored 71 goals in 26 games, which works out as an average of 2.73 every 90 minutes. The second-highest scorers are Madrid with 55 strikes.

Yet Flick will be even more pleased with the defensive strides his team has made in recent weeks. Throughout that six-game winning run mentioned above, Barcelona have conceded just two goals.

They head into this weekend’s game looking to register a fourth consecutive clean sheet in the league for the first time since March 2024. They did ship four goals in an eight-goal thriller against Atletico in the Copa del Rey, but for the most part Barcelona have tightened up considerably.

Their latest shut-out came in a 1-0 victory over Benfica in midweek, as Barca established a narrow first-leg advantage in the Champions League round of 16 despite having Pau Cubarsi sent off midway through the opening half.

That tie remains in the balance and the second leg follows less than 72 hours after this match, so it is inevitable that Flick will have one eye on Benfica’s visit.

The title race back home is too tight for Barcelona to completely take their eye off the ball, however. Atletico are one point behind the Blaugrana and Madrid are just three points back.

A home game against Osasuna is not the sort of fixture Barca can afford to drop points in if they want to become Spanish champions for the 28th time in their history.

Barcelona vs Osasuna betting tips

The La Liga title race is finely poised as the business end of the campaign gets ever closer.

Barcelona to win by one goal

Osasuna are in the bottom half of La Liga, yet they have only lost two more games than Barcelona. Vicente Moreno’s men are tougher to play against than their league position suggests.

Barca know that well. Their first defeat of the season was not inflicted on them by Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid or Athletic Bilbao, but by Osasuna.

Games involving Moreno’s team tend to be tight. They have drawn 12 matches this term; no other Spanish top-flight side is in double figures.

It is also interesting to note that Osasuna have only lost one of their last 21 games by more than a one-goal margin.

Sandwiched in between the two legs against Benfica, Barcelona might have to settle for a narrow victory on Saturday night.

⚽ Tip Barcelona to win by one goal at 16/5 with Star Sports ⚽

Under 3.5 goals

Barcelona’s new-found solidity and resilience means they no longer have to score quite as many goals to emerge victorious.

That is not to say Barcelona are less effective going forward than they were earlier in the campaign. After all, they remain the highest scorers in Europe’s top five leagues.

Yet at this stage of the campaign, it is impossible to play at full throttle in every encounter. Game management is all-important when you are targeting success on multiple fronts.

If Barcelona were to go 2-0 up, say, the priority would be to protect that lead as opposed to  extending it.

Bear in mind, too, that nine of Osasuna’s last 10 La Liga matches have featured under 3.5 goals.

Ferran Torres to score any time

Flick – and, for that matter, Diego Simeone and Carlo Ancelotti – is faced with a difficult balancing act at present.

All three managers will be tempted to rest some of their key men ahead of the Champions League last-16 second legs, but making too many changes could harm their La Liga title chances.

One man who will hope for a chance from the start is Ferran Torres, who has regularly been called upon for games like this.

Torres’ versatility makes him an ideal rotation option, and a record of one La Liga goal for every 136.6 minutes on the pitch is very respectable indeed.

Provided he is given a chance, Torres can breach Osasuna’s backline this weekend.
