Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen predictions
German football was hoping to have as many as three representatives in the latter stage of this season’s Champions League, but at least one Bundesliga team will bite the dust in the round of 16.
Borussia Dortmund, last term’s runners-up, will expect to see off Lille over two legs, but the draw means it is impossible for both Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen to advance to the quarter-finals.
On the plus side, this has the potential to be a magnificent last-16 tie. Leverkusen stunned Bayern and others last season by going the whole campaign unbeaten on their way to the club’s first ever title.
Xabi Alonso’s side became the first non-Bayern winners of the Bundesliga since Jurgen Klopp led Dortmund to glory in 2012.
In the end, it was not even close. Leverkusen finished 18 points clear of Bayern, who were bumped down to third place by Stuttgart.
Leverkusen then succeeded in keeping virtually their whole squad together, before which Alonso had committed himself to the club for at least another year. Taken together, those two developments ensured Leverkusen would be competitive in 2024/25.
Yet after 24 rounds of Bundesliga fixtures, Bayern hold an eight-point lead over Leverkusen. It is hard to see how Alonso’s team can retain the title from here.
Still, although Bayern have been more consistent domestically, that does not necessarily mean they are the better team in head-to-head clashes.
It is only a couple of weeks since Bayern were thoroughly outplayed by Leverkusen at the BayArena, somehow clinging on for a 0-0 draw despite not managing a single shot on target.
The two teams also drew at the Allianz Arena earlier in the Bundesliga campaign (in fairness, Bayern were far superior that night), but Leverkusen knocked Vincent Kompany’s men out of the DFB-Pokal and Alonso is unbeaten in his six meetings with Bayern, a club he represented with distinction at the end of his career.
Alonso played down his favourable head-to-head record in the build-up, insisting that the Champions League is a different beast and warning against a loss of “emotional control”. But make no mistake: this is as tough a tie for Bayern as it is for Leverkusen.

Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen betting tips
Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen will do battle in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Under 2.5 goals scored
Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen have battled it out three times this season. In 270 minutes of shared football, they have scored a combined three goals.
Each of those three contests featured under 2.5 goals, which is one of the reasons why these odds look attractive.
Another is the nature of the tie. With a second leg still to come, neither side will want to be out of it at the midway point.

Alonso’s comments suggest he will be preaching the importance of keeping things tight at the back first and foremost.
As the home team Bayern will be compelled to take more risks, but they have scored only once in their last four games against Leverkusen.

Bayer Leverkusen to score first
Bayern Munich have failed to open the scoring in their last four matches against Bayer Leverkusen. Again, the recent history of this fixture makes this price look appealing.
Leverkusen will have to strike the right balance at the Allianz Arena. Although they will want to make sure they do not give much away at the back, Alonso’s charges must also offer a threat going forward.
Leverkusen have shown recently that they know how to snuff out Bayern, although that is more difficult to do away from home and the Bavarians’ Champions League pedigree could give them an edge.
Still, Leverkusen are a well-coached side under Alonso and they have a bit of hitting the front both at home and abroad.
Indeed, Leverkusen have opened the scoring 18 times in 24 Bundesliga matches, while they also did so in seven of their eight games in the league phase.

Patrik Schick to score any time
It looks like Harry Kane will finish as the Bundesliga’s top scorer for a second season running, but if anyone can catch him it is Patrik Schick.
The Czech Republic international only scored 13 goals in all competitions in the whole of last term, despite Leverkusen’s success.
Schick has exceeded that tally in the Bundesliga alone in 2024/25, with his 16 league strikes putting him five behind Kane.
Schick has only found the net once in Europe, so there is room for improvement in that regard.
Where better to start than the first leg of this intriguing Champions League knockout tie?
