Bayern Munich are almost there. An eight-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga means they will be crowned German champions if they beat Mainz and Bayer Leverkusen fail to defeat Augsburg.

Mainz are no pushovers, though, and they have their own ambitions as the season nears an end. Who will come out on top at the Allianz Arena?

Bayern Munich vs Mainz predictions

Bayern Munich are almost there. A 4-0 thumping of Heidenheim last weekend, together with Bayer Leverkusen’s 1-1 draw with St Pauli, has left Vincent Kompany’s side on the brink of the Bundesliga title.

With four games left to play, Bayern lead Leverkusen by eight points at the summit of the standings.

The championship could be won as early as this weekend: if Bayern beat Mainz and Leverkusen drop points against Augsburg in a game due to take place at the same time, the title will be on its way back to Bavaria.

There have been a couple of occasions where it looked like Leverkusen would haul themselves back into the race, but overall this will go down as a pretty comfortable triumph for Bayern.

Bayern first climbed into top spot at the end of gameweek three and they have remained there ever since. Leverkusen, on the other hand, have not occupied first place at all in 2024/25.

Bayern lead the way not only on points, but also on goals scored, goals conceded, the number of wins, goal difference, expected goal difference and more. It is hard to begrudge them their victory whenever it is confirmed.

Leverkusen will look back with regret on their 0-0 draw with Kompany’s crew in the middle of February. They dominated that match from start to finish. It was 90 minutes of pure frustration for the champions.

Had Leverkusen taken their chances and won that game, they would have closed the gap to five points. Instead, Bayern maintained a healthy buffer in what had long ago become a two-way tussle.

Kompany’s team will not win the Champions League or the DFB-Pokal this term, making it difficult to gauge how successful a season it has been.

Given Bayern did not enter 2024/25 as the defending champions and are being led by a manager in his maiden campaign in charge, a title victory should be seen as sufficient.

Not everyone views it that way. Bayern have been criticised for their failure to at least reach the last four of the Champions League. With the final due to be held at the Allianz Arena, some see that as a missed opportunity.

Regaining the title from Leverkusen is not to be sniffed at, but Bayern will be expected to kick on next term.

Bayern Munich vs Mainz betting tips

Bayern Munich can take another step closer to the Bundesliga title when they face Mainz.

Bayern Munich to win and under 3.5 goals

It is a matter of when rather than if Bayern Munich wrap up the title, but they face a trickier assignment than Bayer Leverkusen this weekend.

Mainz remain in the mix for Champions League qualification with four matches remaining. They trail RB Leipzig in fourth by two points. Third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt, whom Mainz face on May 4, are not uncatchable, but Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund are also in the conversation.

If Mainz get over the line, it will chiefly be down to their defensive solidity. Only the top two have shipped fewer goals.

Mainz’s 30 matches have contained an average of 2.8 goals, the fourth-fewest in the division.

Overall, Bayern should have too much quality for the visitors to the Allianz Arena.

Second half higher scoring

Mainz will aim to keep things tight on Saturday and they may well have some success early on.

Bo Henriksen’s charges have the fourth-best first-half record in the Bundesliga, so they tend to fare relatively well between minutes one and 45.

Whether they can resist Bayern Munich for the entire game remains to be seen. It will be especially difficult to hold them at bay should the title be up for grabs.

Bayern’s games have contained 48 goals in the first half and 68 in the second period. This match is likely to follow a similar pattern.

Harry Kane to score first

Despite scoring 36 goals across all competitions, Harry Kane has not escaped criticism from the German press this season.

Kane has been accused of not delivering the goods in the biggest games, while it has also been pointed out that nine of his 24 Bundesliga goals have been penalties.

Kane is on course to finish as the league’s top scorer for a second season on the bounce, though, so it is hard to be too critical of his performance this term.

Kane has become even more important since Jamal Musiala was ruled out for the rest of the campaign with injury.

The former Tottenham Hotspur frontman is the obvious choice to break the deadlock against Mainz.
