Bayern Munich vs St Pauli predictions

Bayern Munich are in pole position to win the Bundesliga title this season, but the job is not done yet.

A 3-2 defeat by Bochum and 1-1 draw with Union Berlin before the March international break opened the door to Bayer Leverkusen, who are now six points shy of the summit of the standings.

With Xabi Alonso’s team in action against Bochum on Friday night, the gap between the top two could be down to three points by the time Bayern face St Pauli the following day.

There is no need for panic at the Allianz Arena. Vincent Kompany’s team are still strong favourites to regain the title they lost to Leverkusen last term. Their six-point lead is supplemented by a significant goal difference advantage.

However, those two poor results earlier this month have made things interesting once more. Bayern have some potentially tricky matches still to play, with Borussia Dortmund, Mainz and RB Leipzig among their opponents in the final eight rounds of fixtures.

Bayern were outplayed by Leverkusen in a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga last month, but they then beat them 5-0 on aggregate in the last 16 of the Champions League.

That handsome success, together with the underlying numbers across the Bundesliga campaign, suggest Bayern have been the best team in Germany this term.

Yet if they were to slip up a couple more times, Bayern would potentially allow Alonso’s side right back into the conversation. They have been guilty of taking their eye off the ball at times, not least in that 3-2 loss to Bochum in which their opponents came from two goals down to triumph.

After Bayern’s next game, the 1-1 draw with Union Berlin last time out, Kompany refused to criticise his team.

“It was a game of two stories,” he said. “There’s the performance and there’s the result. When we don’t take three points, we’re disappointed with the result – that’s very simple. But I’ve been in football long enough to know that this wasn’t a bad performance away from home.”

Results are king at this stage of the season, though, and a man of Kompany’s experience knows that better than most. Anything other than a win on Saturday would be damaging for the league leaders.

Bayern Munich vs St Pauli betting tips

Bayern Munich will be looking to take a step closer to the Bundesliga title when they face St Pauli.

Bayern Munich to win to nil

Bayer Leverkusen have the chance to pile the pressure on Bayern Munich by winning on Friday night, but it is difficult to see Kompany’s team slipping up.

If the lead is indeed cut to three points ahead of kick-off, that will sharpen Bayern’s concentration. They are not in action in midweek either, so Kompany is free to pick his strongest possible XI for this match.

At the other end of the division, St Pauli are fighting for their Bundesliga lives. They are six points clear of the automatic relegation places and five ahead of Bochum in the play-off spot.

Needless to say, St Pauli will not have earmarked this game as one in which they expect to pick up points.

They are the Bundesliga’s lowest scorers with 20 goals, so there is a good chance Bayern will keep a clean sheet this weekend.

Penalty scored in match

Despite the fact he has scored 32 goals in all competitions this season, Harry Kane has found himself on the end of some sharp criticism from the German media at times.

One of the sticks they have (somewhat confusingly) used to beat him with is his excellent record from 12 yards.

Thirteen of Kane’s 32 goals have come from the penalty spot. He is extremely reliable when it comes to spot-kicks and Bayern have been awarded plenty of them.

St Pauli will sit deep on Saturday and they will be forced to spend much of the match defending their own box.

Do not be surprised if Bayern are awarded another penalty – and if they are, Kane will almost certainly convert it. Handily, this wager also covers a St Pauli spot-kick.

Jamal Musiala to score any time

Despite competition from Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Kinglsey Coman, Jamal Musiala is Bayern Munich’s second-highest goalscorer after Kane.

The Germany international has found the back of the net on 17 occasions in all competitions, a tally which includes 11 Bundesliga strikes.

Musiala was on target for Germany in their 3-3 draw with Italy last weekend and he will now turn his attention back to the Bundesliga.

At the odds available, Musiala is the best value pick in the anytime scorer market for Bayern’s clash with St Pauli.
