A celebration of family and Golf:
The AFRIYEA Parent-Child Golf Championship is an annual event aimed at encouraging family participation in golf.
It also serves as a platform for parents and guardians to witness the progress of their children in both golf and the life skills that the sport imparts, fostering discipline, patience, and resilience.
This year’s event saw players as young as four years old and as experienced as 80 years.
Monica Katuramu, an 80-year-old who was the first president of the Uganda Ladies Golf Union, played alongside her 10-year-old granddaughter, Shaykana.
With 58 years of golfing experience across East Africa, Mrs. Katuramu was also the chief guest of this year’s championship.
“Golf is a wonderful game for our health and joy. It instills the greatest habits of discipline, respect, and friendship across all generations,” said Katuramu during the closing ceremony.
Voices of leadership:
Isaiah Mwesige, CEO of AFRIYEA Golf Academy, reflected on the sport’s impact. “Golf teaches patience, resilience, and teamwork—skills that extend beyond the fairways and into everyday life. Just as we have bad days in life, we have bad rounds in golf, but through those valleys, we learn to strategize and overcome challenges to better our paths toward our targets or goals. Families learn valuable lessons here that they wouldn’t encounter elsewhere,” he said.
Frank Kirungi, the Chairman of Toro Golf Club, spoke of the club’s legacy and impact. “Toro Golf Club has historically provided an enabling environment for young people interested in golf. Through our partnership with AFRIYEA Golf programs, we aim to nurture young talent to feed into national teams. During this championship, we saw many parents play for the first time, and we hope to encourage them to take lessons and apply for membership to enjoy the game even more.”
“Golf is a beautiful game for all ages, and it’s amazing for us to have all the young people and the parents having fun on the course and at the club. I personally participated in this championship, pairing with my son, and playing against members was an unbeatable experience,” said Andrew Isagara, an executive member of the club and participant.
A worthy championship to remember
The winning pair, Bingi Aloysius and Shalom Kayonga, spoke about the meaningful connection they experienced on the course.
“Golf has always been my passion, but playing alongside Shalom has been incredibly rewarding. It’s an encouragement for him and for many other juniors. Today, we brought our A-game to win this championship. I saw tremendous potential in many players, but particularly in Shalom. If he maintains his passion, training habits, and follows the principles of the academy and the club, he is destined for a great future.” Bing remarked.
The championship highlighted family-oriented values and the broader lessons golf teaches.
