Dortmund’s chances of claiming a Champions League place for next season are fast disappearing. They signed off for the recent international break with two straight defeats.

BVB will restart their league campaign against Mainz 05 at Signal Iduna Park. The visitors are the surprise package of the season. They went into the international break sitting third in the Bundesliga table.

Dortmund vs Mainz predictions

Dortmund are midtable with 35 points from 26 matches.

The gap to the top four is now in double figures, and BVB has just eight matches to close it. The reality is that it is already too late.

Last season’s beaten Champions League finalists have won just ten matches in the Bundesliga. There have also been five draws, and highlighting just how inconsistent they have been, BVB has lost 11 times.

A change of manager seems to have made little difference. Niko Kovac took control of the team at the beginning of February.

There was a brief improvement in results, with wins in the Champions League and over Union Berlin and St. Pauli in the Bundesliga, but the cold hard facts are that the Black and Yellows have won two and lost four of Kovac’s six league matches in charge.

Dortmund’s most recent result was a 2-0 defeat away to Leipzig on Matchday 26. Goals from Xavi Simons and Lois Openda ensured BVB went into the international break on the back of another defeat.

High-flying Mainz are unbeaten in their last six with four wins and two draws. This excellent run of form has seen them gatecrash the top four, and they are right in the heart of the battle for a Champions League place next season.

When Mainz beat Bayern Munich 2-1 on Matchday 14, it looked like one of those freak results. They sat ninth in the league at the time and literally no one saw the shock win coming.

Little did we know it was the start of something special for Bo Henriksen’s team. Three wins and three defeats followed the win over Bayern.

But since Die Nullfunfer last tasted defeat against Werder on Matchday 20, they have picked up 14 points from an unbeaten run of six matches.

The unbeaten run started with a 0-0 draw at home to Augsburg. A four match winning streak followed.

That winning run unfortunately came to an end when Henriksen’s team were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg on Matchday 26.

Dortmund vs Mainz betting tips

It will be interesting to see who has benefited most from the international break. Will we finally get to see the real Borussia Dortmund? Or will Mainz pick up from where they left off and continue their impressive form? Our Dortmund vs Mainz match betting tips follow:

Mainz to win

Mainz are 4/1 to win this match with Tote. Those are staggering odds.

Okay, Dortmund are in the last eight of the Champions League. They are clearly no mugs and they are clearly underperforming in the Bundesliga this season.

But look at the recent form of the two teams. Furthermore, Dortmund have only won seven of their 13 home matches in the Bundesliga this season.

BVB have only lost three of those 13 matches. But those three defeats have come in their last five home fixtures.

Mainz to win or draw is 5/4 in the double chance market. I did intend to make that my first tip. But we simply can’t ignore odds of 4/1 on a win for the visitors.

⚽ Back Mainz to win at 4/1 with Tote ⚽

Under 2.5 goals

Both teams scored in the last three Mainz matches, but not in their four matches before that. Both teams have failed to score in Dortmund’s last five matches.

No in both teams to score is 11/10 with Sky Bet, and that is very tempting.

But under 2.5 goals is 6/5, and with Dortmund not scoring in their last two, and Mainz only conceding four in their last seven, it looks the better option.

This wager would also cover the 1-1 draw should both teams cancel each other out.

⚽ Back there to be under 2.5 goals at 6/5 with Sky Bet ⚽

Over 4.5 cards

There were six cards brandished in Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat to Leipzig two weeks ago. Three for the hosts, and three for BVB.

Okay, that’s a hostile match, and cards were to be expected.

Mainz’s last match against Freiburg had four cards, which included one red and three yellows.

We expect to see a more fired up and determined Dortmund after the international break. And with a Champions League place on the line for the visitors, we expect to see Mainz well up for this one as well.

Expect it to be a hard fought match with no quarter given.

⚽ Back five cards or more at 7/10 with BetMGM ⚽
