This is not the start to his first managerial job that Nuri Sahin was hoping for.

The Borussia Dortmund head coach, who was a key man for the club during his playing days before going on to serve as Edin Terzic’s assistant, is finding life difficult in the dugout following his appointment in the summer.

Dortmund, it is fair to say, have not begun the campaign brightly. They finished fifth in the Bundesliga last term and are currently even lower than that, occupying seventh spot in the standings heading into this crunch clash with RB Leipzig.

The gloom is not limited to the Bundesliga. BVB have won two of their three games in the Champions League, but earlier this week they were dumped out of the DFB-Pokal by Wolfsburg. That was another blow to Sahin.

Dortmund fans have huge respect for a man who represented the club with distinction during his playing days, so Sahin has not yet faced much public ire. Indeed, most of the criticism has been aimed at his superiors for handing a managerial novice the job just weeks after BVB had finished as Champions League runners-up.

Sebastian Kehl, another former Dortmund midfielder who now works as the club’s sporting director, backed Sahin after the loss to Wolfsburg.

“Nothing,” he said when asked what the result meant for Sahin’s future. “Except that we’re all disappointed. The coach is also very disappointed. The pressure is always there at Borussia, the reaction of the fans shows that. We are lagging behind our standards, we will work on that.

“This is not a situation that BVB hasn’t overcome in the past. We’re going through this together. The squad is currently small due to injuries, but we’ll do everything we can to win this game [against Leipzig].”

Yet for all Kehl’s vocal support, he knows privately that Sahin needs to turn the results around. That is not to say the manager is solely or even mostly responsible for Dortmund’s struggles, but it is clear to everyone that things are not going well right now.

A defeat by RB Leipzig this weekend would probably push Sahin closer to the exit door at Signal Iduna Park.

The loss of Xavi Simons to injury for the remainder of the campaign is a blow, but there is no doubt that Leipzig have impressed up to now – most notably in a 3-2 win at the home of Bayer Leverkusen that ended the champions’ long unbeaten run.

Leipzig will cause Dortmund problems in this one. They thrive in transition and look well placed to exploit BVB’s deficiencies without the ball. An away victory is the way to go here.

RB Leipzig will hope to feed off any anxiety that exists inside Signal Iduna Park. It could be a case of keeping things tight early on before attempting to capitalise on any Dortmund errors, of which there have been many of late.
