Nuri Sahin really needed that.
After a mediocre start to the Bundesliga season, the Borussia Dortmund manager found himself under pressure heading into a crunch clash with RB Leipzig at the weekend.
Sahin has the respect and admiration of the BVB fans because of his service to the club as a player. In addition, many supporters have criticised his superiors more than the head coach himself for Dortmund’s mixed results in 2024/25.
Even so, the buck usually stops with the man in the dugout and a home defeat by Leipzig last time out would have pushed Sahin closer to the exit door.
As it is, the former midfielder is breathing a little easier after overseeing a 2-1 victory which he will hope proves to be a turning point.
It was a deserved win too. Dortmund were much the better team at Signal Iduna Park. Despite falling behind, they created the better chances and restricted Leipzig to relatively little.
It is important that they kick on from here. In fairness to Sahin and his coaching staff, Dortmund have fared pretty well in the Champions League, a tournament in which they finished as runners-up last term when Sahin was serving as assistant to Edin Terzic.
True, they lost 5-2 to Real Madrid in their last European outing. But before that Dortmund eased to a 3-0 victory over Club Brugge and destroyed Celtic 7-1. They remain in the mix for the top-eight finish that would send the German outfit directly through to the round of 16.
Qualifying for next season’s edition of the competition is Dortmund’s main aim (a top-four finish in the Bundesliga would guarantee them a Champions League berth, although fifth may prove to be enough as it was last year).
However, it may well be the case that this version of BVB is better suited to cup football. Sahin’s side are wildly inconsistent, but on their day they could probably give anyone a game.
Matchday four pits them against Sturm Graz, who are one of four teams (RB Leipzig, surprisingly, are another) without a point to their name so far. Make no mistake: this is another must-win encounter for Dortmund and their manager.

Sahin seems to have determined that his team are better going forward than they are defensively, and he has built his game plan around that reality.
In that 7-1 demolition of Celtic, Dortmund showed they can tear teams apart when they are in full flow.

With the confidence gained from that triumph over RB Leipzig, BVB are likely to have a spring in their step in this one.
This promises to be another entertaining encounter at Signal Iduna Park, where Dortmund have won six out of six in 2024/25.

Keeping the back door shut has not been one of Borussia Dortmund’s strengths so far this season.
Sahin’s charges have conceded in each of their last seven Bundesliga outings. Their last clean sheet in Germany’s top tier was back in August.
They did successfully shut Club Brugge out on matchday one of the Champions League, but their defensive numbers since then have left a lot to be desired.
It is clear that Sturm Graz are one of the weakest sides in the competition, but it would not come as a shock if the Austrian team managed to make the opposition net bulge on Tuesday.
Dortmund should still win this one pretty comfortably, but their wait for a second continental clean sheet is likely to go on.

Serhou Guirassy to score first
Serhou Guirassy was the match-winner for Borussia Dortmund in the 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig, continuing his fine start to life in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Guirassy missed the first few weeks of the campaign through injury, but he has made up for lost time since then.
The former Stuttgart striker, who moved to Signal Iduna Park over the summer, has now found the back of the net eight times in 11 matches in all competitions.
Guirassy is one of the deadliest marksmen in German football and Sturm Graz will find it difficult to keep him under control on Tuesday night.
The Guinea international excels at finding space in the 18-yard box and it is rare to see him snatch at chances that come his way, Guirassy can add another goal to his tally on Tuesday.
