Brighton & Hove Albion vs Liverpool predictions

Liverpool have bigger fish to fry than the EFL Cup in 2024/25, but that does not mean the tournament is not worth winning.

Indeed, despite ambitious talk of a potential quadruple, this was the only piece of silverware they collected in Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign at Anfield.

Arne Slot, Klopp’s successor, has had a good start to life on Merseyside. A 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday means his side are still unbeaten in all competitions, even though Manchester City now occupy top spot in the Premier League table.

A top-four finish was seen as the main goal before a ball had been kicked in 2024/25. But if Liverpool keep this up for a few more weeks, they will not be able to exclude themselves from the title conversation any longer.

Meanwhile Slot has a perfect record in the Champions League, where Liverpool are one of only two teams with maximum points following victories over AC Milan, Bologna and RB Leipzig.

In recent weeks the Reds have demonstrated a knack for picking up positive results even when they are not quite at their best.

For instance, despite being second best in the first part of a Premier League meeting with Chelsea the weekend before last, Liverpool took the lead and went on to win 2-1.

They had to dig deep to beat Leipzig away from home a few days later, before coming from behind to draw 2-2 with Arsenal last time out. Liverpool were on the back foot in the opening 45 minutes at the Emirates Stadium yet found a way back into the match thereafter.

That is an admirable trait and one which should help Liverpool in all four competitions this season, including the EFL Cup. As the holders, this group of players appreciates the value of the tournament, even if it is never going to rival the Premier League or Champions League.

Liverpool thrashed West Ham United 5-1 in the last round, but they can expect a tougher assignment against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday.

Brighton & Hove Albion vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool are the favourites to reach the next round of the EFL Cup, but this is a difficult game to call.

Draw

To the delight of medical departments everywhere, extra time is no longer used in the EFL Cup before the semi-finals. If the score is level after 90 minutes, matches go straight to penalties.

In our view, there is a good chance of spot-kicks being required to separate Brighton and Liverpool on Wednesday.

Games like this are tough to call since it is hard to forecast whether either Slot or Fabian Hurzeler will name his strongest possible XI.

There is a balance to be struck between resting key men for the weekend (when these two teams will face off at Anfield) and giving your team the best chance of reaching the quarter-finals and remaining in contention for a major trophy.

Liverpool’s performances have dipped a little of late, so a win could be beyond them – not least because Brighton have home advantage. Do not be surprised if this one is decided by a shoot-out.

Go for a draw at 5/2 with Parimatch

Brighton to score first

Liverpool have not been quick out of the blocks in either of their last two Premier League games.

Indeed, both Chelsea and Arsenal were on top against the Reds from minutes one to 45. Brighton will be hoping to experience the same advantage early on at the Amex.

Bear in mind, too, that Hurzeler’s team have had an extra day’s rest and significantly less travel to endure.

Brighton hosted Wolves on Saturday, whereas Liverpool were in action in north London more than 24 hours later.

That could help the Seagulls to hit the ground running in this EFL Cup fourth-round tie on the south coast.

Evan Ferguson to score any time

It was a long time coming, but Evan Ferguson finally ended his lengthy goal drought at the weekend.

The Irishman’s strike in the 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers was his first for club or country since 25 November 2023.

The last 12 months have been largely frustrating for Ferguson, who has struggled with both form and fitness.

Hurzeler will hope that Saturday’s well-taken goal against Wolves proves to be a turning point for the youngster.

In a bid to build up the player’s confidence, the Brighton manager is likely to start Ferguson against Liverpool.

You know what they say about London buses? With that in mind, it is worth a wager on the 20-year-old finding the back of the net on Wednesday.

Tip Evan Ferguson to score any time at 21/10 with Parimatch
