Brighton & Hove Albion have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the Premier League this season. Right now, they are going through one of their difficult spells.

West Ham United fans have not had much to cheer about recently either. They will not be relegated, but that is just about the only positive takeaway from their campaign to date. Who will triumph on the south coast?

Brighton vs West Ham United predictions

A few weeks back, Brighton fans were dreaming of potential Champions League qualification.

A 2-2 draw with Manchester City prior to the March international break lifted Fabian Hurzeler’s side up to seventh in the Premier League standings, just a point behind City in fifth.

There has not been much to celebrate since then, however. Brighton were knocked out of the FA Cup by Nottingham Forest before taking one point from a possible 12 in the league.

The Seagulls now trail the top five by 11 points, making Champions League football an impossibility.

Brighton are still in the mix for Europe (an eighth-place finish should be enough for the Conference League), but the momentum is against them after a five-match winless run.

Still, with just a point separating them from Bournemouth in eighth, Brighton have plenty to play for in the final weeks.

The same cannot be said for West Ham United. European regulars under David Moyes, they have taken a step backwards in their first season without the Scot.

West Ham are 17th heading into the weekend. They will not be relegated, but that is chiefly because of the shortcomings of the three promoted clubs.

The Hammers are on course to end the campaign with 41 points, which would be 11 fewer than they managed in 2023/24 – and that was seen as a disappointing season at the time.

West Ham got off to a poor start under Julen Lopetegui and it was always going to take a while for Graham Potter to get his ideas across.

But Potter has not made the sort of positive impact that many envisaged. If the season had started when he took the reins in January, West Ham would still be 17th. In fact, they were higher than that when Potter took over.

Brighton will be keen to get one over on their former manager this weekend. Their run-in looks tricky, with Newcastle United, Liverpool and an in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers among their opponents, but a victory here would get the south coast side back on track in their bid for Europe.

West Ham have more modest ambitions in the short-term, but a strong end to the season would at least give Potter some breathing space heading into the summer.

Brighton host West Ham United in the Premier League this weekend – who will come out on top?

Brighton to win

Confidence will be low in both camps ahead of Saturday’s showdown at the Amex Stadium, making this one difficult to predict.

Before this present run of five matches without a win, they collected 12 points from the last 12 on offer. It has often been a case of boom or bust for Brighton this term.

They will also have to do without Joao Pedro, their top scorer, following his red card against Brentford last weekend.

Despite all that, we expect Brighton’s luck to turn here. West Ham have looked uninspired all season long, and since the end of February only Southampton and Leicester City have worse records.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals

In Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paqueta, West Ham are not exactly short of attacking talent.

Niclas Fullkrug has not really got going at the London Stadium, but the striker started the Champions League final for Borussia Dortmund last season.

The fact that West Ham have quality at their disposal makes their form even more frustrating for the supporters.

They may well get some joy against Brighton, though. The Seagulls have the worst defensive record in the top 14.

It is hard to have much confidence in either team’s backline at the moment.

Danny Welbeck to score any time

With Joao Pedro sidelined, Danny Welbeck is guaranteed to lead the line for Brighton.

The 34-year-old has scored nine goals this season and he will be desperate to reach double figures in the league for the first time in his career.

Welbeck, who was critical of his team’s performance in that 4-2 defeat by Brentford last time out, has found the back of the net twice in Brighton’s last three games.

He is enjoying an Indian summer at the Amex, with Welbeck having now made more appearances and scored more goals for Brighton than he did for either Manchester United or Arsenal.
