Bubba Watson is fighting for his LIV Golf future after suffering relegation over the weekend.

The two-time Masters champion’s nightmare season continued as he finished in a tie for 42nd in Chicago.

Watson, 45, was four-over at Bolingbrook and is set to lose his place in the lucrative LIV field alongside Kalle Samooja, Branden Grace, Scott Vincent, and Kieran Vincent.

And Watson doesn’t even have the luxury of last season’s loophole that saved the LIV futures of team captains Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood in 2023.

Their roles with the Cleeks and Majesticks ensured they were exempt from relegation but that has not been extended to RangeGoats skipper Watson.

He will now try to save his position via a little-known loophole that appears to be added insurance for the names who traded the PGA Tour for LIV.

Per his contract, Watson may now present a “business case” to his team to secure a lifeline.

Only captains are allowed to use the clause, which leaves the other four relegated golfers out of options.

Watson is optimistic he will be sticking around despite his struggles.

“It’s been a tough year,” he said after his final round on Sunday.

“But I think my teammates want me back and I’d like to be back.

“I know some discussions need to take place and there’s some business considerations.

“We have one of the most popular teams. Am I part of that? I think I am and I’m committed to playing better.”

RangeGoats manager Randall Wells says discussions have already taken place with Watson.

“He’s very disappointed with the way he’s played,” Wells said via Sports Illustrated.

“He’s had a bad run of 11 tournaments or so and we consider this a slump and not a downturn.

“We’ve already had realistic discussions about this and his teammates have confidence that he will return to form.

“Our goal is to be a competitive team.”

Watson has a chance to bounce back in this week’s Team Championship.

The RangeGoats are ninth in the standings with $50million in prize money up for grabs and they’ll start the tournament in the quarterfinal stage.

Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC, Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII and Cam Smith’s Ripper GC are all awarded a bye thanks to their top three finish.

If they maintain their current position, every golfer on Watson’s roster would earn $200,000 – compared to $1.2million for the winners.

After the 2023 season, Watson admitted he would walk away if he felt he had lost the faith of his team.

“I told my team if they don’t think I am good enough to play, they can kick me out and we will put another good golfer in my place,” he said last August.

“I am going to play until they kick me out. I love helping the young guys.

“They are all trying to be better and also better at golf.

“I get to influence three golfers in life, they are all parents and young dads.

“I want to be there for them and if they have a problem, I want to be able to help them.”
