Burnley v Sunderland prediction
Just three points separate the top four in the Championship heading into the new weekend in what looks set to be one of the tightest and most congested promotion battles in the second tier for some time.
Friday night sees the act in the promotion-chasing script as Burnley and Sunderland come to blows as they each look to put distance between themselves and the rest.
Burnley head into Friday night’s blockbuster encounter as favourites, being at home and higher up the table, and carry with them a run of just one defeat in their last 24 matches in all competitions dating back to August, which includes being unbeaten in their last 14.
A hard-fought win at play-off chasing Blackburn in the East Lancashire derby a fortnight ago leaves them second in the Championship table and just a solitary point behind the league leaders Leeds, though remain ahead of third placed Sheffield United only on goal difference.
Scott Parker’s side have by far the best defensive record in the Championship this season, conceding just nine goals from their 26 matches so far after four clean sheets in a row in the league, including letting in only four from their 12 league games at home.
Back to back victories for Sunderland in the league has seen them climb back to within touching distance of the top of the table and the automatic promotion chases as they seek a return to the Premier League for the first time since their relegation in 2017.
Regis le Bris’ side’s most recent win over Portsmouth leaves them in fourth place in the second tier table, just two points behind the automatic promotions spots and three off the top of the table, and head to Turf Moor knowing a win would take them above their opponents.
The Black Cats may have won their last two league games but have only won one of their last seven matches away from home, a record they will be needing to fix to maintain their charge for an automatic promotion slot.
The Wearside club got the better of the two teams when they last met back in August, one of only two occasions the Clarets have been beaten in the league this season, but Sunderland haven’t won a league game at Turf Moor since 2005.
Friday night will no doubt a close contest between two promotion chasers, and Burnley’s record of three draws in their last five matches, combined with just one Sunderland away win in their last seven, leads me to believe a 1-1 draw is the most likely scoreline from the match.
Burnley v Sunderland betting tips
While Zian Flemming has been on the pitch for Burnley, the on loan forward has scored each of the club’s last four matches, which includes coming off the bench during extra time last week to score twice in an eventual 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup.
Meanwhile, Wilson Isidor has bagged for Sunderland in three of their last four league games, taking him to the top of the Black Cats’ goal scoring charts for the season.
