The 2024 World Basketball Day celebrations were held in the Eastern district of Busia on Monday, December 9.
The event which is part of the broader Basketball for Good initiative spearheaded by the FIBA Foundation in partnership with Olympic Solidarity took place at the OlympAfrica Youth Center and focused on Youth Development as well as Mental and Menstrual Health.
With support from the Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations (FUBA), basic basketball skills were passed on to kids who attended the one-day camp.
Coaches Angella Namirimu, Albert Achiko, Moses Okwera and Silverbacks guard Tony Drileb led the on-court sessions that included teaching kids the fundamentals of basketball.
The event also attracted several partners including the iCARRe Foundation, Ashoka Foundation and WoMena Uganda who held an impactful menstrual hygiene session with the girls, empowering the young women with knowledge.
Patricia Ayebare, the FUBA Youth Commissioner, echoed the importance of the camp.
“We are excited to leverage the power of basketball to not only promote physical activity but also address critical social and emotional needs within the community.”
