CAF Awards 2024: Uganda Cranes miss out on Top Five Shortlist

Uganda Cranes has been eliminated from the final list for the Men’s National Team of the Year after initially making it in the top ten.

Instead, last Afcon edition’s final four, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, DR Congo and South Africa plus Sudan make the cut for the final awards.

Uganda were crowned team of the year in 2016 when they qualified for Afcon 2017 for the first time in over 40 years.

Tanzania’s Simba and Young Africans also failed to make the cut in the club of the year category leaving seasoned giants Al Ahly, Esperance, Zamalek, RS Berkane and Mamelodi Sundowns to fight for the gong.

Ex-Uganda Cranes coach Sebastien Desabre, now with DR Congo is amongst the coach the year top five shortlist.

The biggest award, the Player of the Year was also trimmed to five with Simon Adingra, Serhou Guirassy, Achraf Hakimi, Ademola Lookman and Ronwen Williams making the cut.

The South African goalkeeper has the most nominations vying for the Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year as well.

The CAF Awards 2024 cover the period between January 2024 and October 2024 and will have a ceremony held in Morocco on December 16 this year.

Caf awards 2024 nominees – men’s categories

Player of the Year

  • Simon Adingra (Brighton & Hove Albion and Ivory Coast), Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund and Guinea), Achraf Hakimi (Paris St-Germain and Morocco), Ademola Lookman (Atalanta and Nigeria) and Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa).

Young player of the year

  • Yankuba Minteh (Brighton & Hove Albion, England), Eliesse Ben Seghir, Lamine Camara (both Monaco, France), Oumar Diakite (Reims, France) and Karim Konate (Red Bull Salzburg, Austria)

Goalkeeper of the year

  • Yahia Fofana (Angers and Ivory Coast), Andre Onana (Manchester United and Cameroon), Stanley Nwabali (Chippa United and Nigeria), Mostafa Shobeir (Al Ahly and Egypt), Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa).

Inter-club player of the year

  • Issoufou Dayo (RS Berkane, Morocco), Husein El Shahat, Mostafa Shobier (both Al Ahly, Egypt), Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns, South Africa), Ahmed Sayd Zizo – (Zamalek, Egypt).

Club of the year

  • Al Ahly, Zamalek (both Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia), Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), RS Berkane (Morocco),

National team of the year

  • DR Congo, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan

Manager of the year

  • Hugo Broos (South Africa), Sebastien Desabre (DR Congo), Emerse Fae (Ivory Coast), Pedro Goncalves (Angola), Marcel Koller (Al Ahly)
