There are two frontrunners for Canelo Alvarez’s next fight, according to his manager and trainer Eddy Reynoso.
Canelo is expected to return to the ring for his two regular slots in May and September this year.
The Mexican superstar is reportedly finalising terms with Terence Crawford for a blockbuster Las Vegas showdown on Mexican Independence Day weekend.
But before then he steps between the ropes on Cinco de Mayo weekend.
His opponent is currently undecided, although his team have narrowed down their options.
“Well, there are several, there is William Scull,” Reynoso told Box Azteca.
“This is the classified one for this one, there is [Christian] Mbilli, something like that, I think he lives in Canada.
“Hey, they’re the ones more or less.
“Right now there is nothing concrete yet, we also hear about Crawford for September but right now we still really don’t have anything certain.
“Even I think about 15 more days.”
William Scull (23-0) is currently in possession of the final piece of the undisputed super middleweight puzzle, the IBF belt.
Canelo held all four major sanctioning body belts until July when he was stripped of the red and gold strap for refusing to fight Scull, who was his mandatory at the time.
As a result, Scull was matched up against Vladimir Shishkin in a vacant title fight, which he won via a contentious unanimous decision.
Canelo chose to box Edgar Berlanga instead of Scull last September due to the Cuban’s lack of name value.
However, now that he holds the IBF title it will be a far more appealing proposition for Canelo.
Christian Mbilli (28-0) serves as a far more risky option.
The Frenchman is currently ranked No.1 by Ring Magazine at 168lbs and is a devastating puncher.
Mbilli is coming off a career-best victory over three-time world title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko last August in Quebec City and previously laid waste to Britain’s Mark Heffron in a round.
According to reports from Boxing Scene he is currently nearing a deal to face Kevin Lele Sadjo in an IBF final eliminator to determine the mandatory for the full world title.
However, he would surely abandon those discussions if Canelo came calling.
