CHAN 2024 final draw held in Nairobi

The draw for the African Nations Champions Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda 2024 was held on Wednesday, 15th January 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya.

With the tournament pushed to August 2025 (to allow thorough preparations), the draw progressed as earlier planned.

Samson Adamu, the CAF Director of Competitions was joined by Uganda’s Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, Mrisho Ngasa of Tanzania and Kenya’s McDonald Mariga, the three legends from the three host countries as the draw assistants.

“Uganda is ready and we have been waiting for a very long time to host such a tournament” Mawanda, capped 75 times for Uganda Cranes remarked at the draw.

The three co-hosts (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) as well as the defending champions Senegal were the top seeded teams occupying the top slots in the groups; A, B, C and D respectively.

Group A

Kenya, two-time winners Morocco and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Angola and Zambia are in group A.

In Group B is Tanzania, Madagascar, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Central African Republic.

Group C

Uganda, Niger, Guinea and two other yet to be established countries will play in group C.

Group D has Senegal, Congo, Sudan and Nigeria.

The draw was graced by the top brass CAF officials led by the vice president, the respective sports ministers from the three host countries, the Football Association presidents from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, local and international media.

All Groups

The winner of CHAN 2024 will now bag USD 3.5 million, an increment by 32 percent.

Generally, the total prize fund from CAF for CHAN was increased by 75 percent.

The CHAN tournament returns to the CECAFA zone for the second third time following successful editions in Sudan (2011) and Rwanda (2016).

Tunisia (2011), Libya (2014) and Senegal (2022) have won the CHAN Tournament one time apiece.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Morocco have won two titles apiece.

DRC won in 2009 and 2016. Morocco’s victories arrived in back-to-back style in 2018 and 2020.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) won the first ever edition of CHAN hosted by Cote D’Ivoire in 2009.

CHAN is the Championship of African Nations, a tournament played by players who ply their trade in the respective domestic leagues on the African countries taking part.
