As preparations for the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) continue, works on Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku have begun.
The stadium, home to reigning champions SC Villa has been earmarked as one of the training grounds to be used for the CHAN that kicks off on February 1st in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
The UPDF Engineering brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Peter Kidemuka, which renovated Mandela National stadium, Namboole and is also working on Kyambogo is the one tasked with ensuring Wankulukuku meets international standards for a training ground.
According to reliable sources, only four training grounds will be available for CHAN and that is Namboole (outside pitch), Kadiba, Kampala International School Uganda (KISU) and Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku.
Kabaka Kyabaggu stadium, Wakiso and African Bible University, Lubowa have been dumped citing long distances and traffic jam while the Kyambogo University training pitch will be incomplete then.
At Wankulukuku, focus is going to be mainly on constructing international standard dressing rooms, the VIP wing and floodlights will be installed according to sources.
