Club Brugge vs Borussia Dortmund predictions

Borussia Dortmund almost went all the way in the Champions League last season.

Drawn in the group of death, many tipped BVB to suffer an early exit from Europe’s premier tournament. Instead, they topped a brutal-looking section ahead of Paris Saint-Germain, AC Milan and Newcastle United.

Then came a 3-1 aggregate victory over PSV in the round of 16, followed by a 5-4 defeat of Atletico Madrid over two legs in the quarter-finals.

Dortmund edged out PSG in the semis, winning 1-0 at home and 1-0 away, to book their place in the final.

Edin Terzic’s team were the clear underdogs against Real Madrid, who were widely expected to make light work of opponents that only managed a fifth-place finish in the Bundesliga.

Instead, Dortmund were more than a match for Madrid at Wembley Stadium. They arguably had the better of the game before Dani Carvajal put the Blancos ahead with 16 minutes remaining.

Before that, BVB had missed some huge opportunities to take the lead – and they were ultimately made to regret that profligacy as they fell to a 2-0 defeat.

Despite leading the club to what was only their third ever Champions League final appearance, Terzic departed over the summer amid reports of a rift between the manager and some senior players within the Dortmund squad.

There were also legitimate concerns over Dortmund’s consistency, as evidenced by their inability to finish in the top four of the Bundesliga.

Needless to say, it will be difficult for BVB to reach another final this year. A club of their size will probably be aiming for a quarter-final berth, although this looks set to be a transition season under Nuri Sahin, who was Terzic’s assistant last term.

Dortmund have at least avoided the group of death this time around. So has everyone else. The old format has been replaced by a new-look league phase in which each of the 36 teams will play eight games, four at home and four away.

Dortmund are among the contenders for a top-eight finish, which would see them advance straight to the round of 16. They will be looking to kick-start their campaign with a win on Wednesday.

Club Brugge vs Borussia Dortmund betting tips

Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund will lock horns in the Champions League this week.

Club Brugge or draw – 4/5 (BetMGM)

Club Brugge won the Belgian title last season, pipping Union Saint-Gilloise to top spot by one point.

They also performed well on the continent, reaching the semi-finals of the Conference League and only narrowly losing to Fiorentina over two legs.

Club Brugge have made a strong start to the current campaign and sit top of the table in Belgium after seven games. They have played eight matches in total so far in 2024/25, which is four more than Borussia Dortmund.

That could be a factor: while BVB are still searching for their rhythm after the summer, Club Brugge are fully up to speed.

The Blue-Black are also a tough nut to crack at home, where they have lost just once since the start of last term.

Go for Club Brugge or draw in the double chance market at 4/5 with BetMGM

Under 2.5 goals – 11/10 (BetMGM)

Borussia Dortmund are second in the Bundesliga after three rounds of fixtures, with Sahin overseeing a 4-2 triumph over Heidenheim last time out.

Their previous two games both featured under 2.5 goals and that is a bet we are recommending for Wednesday’s showdown in Brugge.

The home team will approach this game pragmatically. Opening up and flooding men forward would play into Dortmund’s hands given their threat in transition. Club Brugge will instead make a tight defence their first priority.

In fairness to Sahin, his team have looked pretty solid up to now. And while the Dortmund boss let his players off the leash at the weekend, he will encourage a more controlled display here.

All of which means this could be a low-scoring fixture on matchday one of the Champions League.

Choose under 2.5 goals at 11/10 with BetMGM

Draw at half-time – 27/10 (BetMGM)

Teams like Club Brugge have to be adaptable when it comes to switching between domestic and continental competition.

Nicky Hayen’s side are used to dominating possession back home – they have the second-highest average figure in the Belgian Pro League so far this term – but in Europe they often have less than 50 percent of the ball.

As mentioned above, Club Brugge’s primary aim will be to make things difficult for Borussia Dortmund in the opening 45 minutes.

At the same time, BVB will not want to make this an end-to-end encounter from the get-go.

We could be in store for at least 45 minutes of cat-and-mouse football at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
