Technically, the former Texas Tech gunslinger and college baseball pitcher was playing in just his third NFL game during Week 2 of the 2018 season.

But after watching and learning as a backup to veteran Alex Smith during his rookie season, Mahomes was unleashed on the pro football world in 2018.

The Kansas City Chiefs‘ 42-37 road victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers was a brilliant and buzzing sign of everything that was to come.

Super Bowl trophies and MVPs, NFL records, and an early career path that was already pointed toward the Hall of Fame.

New teammate Travis Kelce, who was years away from dating Taylor Swift, expertly predicted the future on September 16, 2018.

“I see Pat doing this all season long,” Kelce said.

“He’s got the confidence. As long as we give him time and get open as wide outs and tight ends and running backs, he’s going to be able to get the best out of everyone.”

On a day when Ben Roethlisberger put up huge numbers (39-of-60, 452 yards, three touchdowns, 104.3 rating) for the Steelers, Mahomes was even sharper.

In just his third game — Mahomes had started the Chiefs’ final 2017 regular-season contest as a rookie — the No. 10 overall pick of the 2017 draft completed 23-of-28 passes for 326 yards, six TDs and a 154.8 rating.

Outside of five incompletions, Mahomes was perfect.

Mahomes was so impressive that Chiefs coach Andy Reid ran out of words[/caption]

His six TD passes tied the most allowed by the Steelers in franchise history — Buffalo Bills Hall of Famer Jim Kelly reached the same mark in 1991.

Kansas City scored 21 points in the first quarter, then 21 more in the second half, outdueling the Steelers before their towel-waving faithful.

The Chiefs were 2-0, soon to start 9-1, and would advance all the way to the AFC Championship against Tom Brady‘s New England Patriots.

It all started with Mahomes, who announced to the NFL in just his second start of his first full season that he was about to change the league.

Kansas City instantly knew it had something special in No. 15.

After Mahomes threw six TDs and led the Chiefs to their first win inside the Steel City in 32 years, Andy Reid‘s biggest challenge as Kansas City’s head coach was keeping surging expectations in check.

“He (Mahomes) had a couple good plays,” Reid said.

Six years later, Mahomes has passed for more than 31,000 yards and thrown more than 240 touchdowns.

He’s 15-3 in the playoffs and has three Super Bowl rings.

Kansas City has started the 2024 campaign an NFL-best 13-1 and is attempting to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls.

When Mahomes blasted the Steelers for 6 TDs, he told the NFL that the next superstar had arrived.
