McLaren‘s Oscar Piastri had been cruising home for only his second-ever Formula 1 race win as the drama unfurled behind him.
Ferrari‘s Charles Leclerc, who went into the event on pole, was doing all he can to avoid slipping to third under pressure from Perez.
A hard-fought manoeuvre around the edges of turn 1 saw the duo make slight contact, which allowed Sainz to move up into third.
Leclerc held onto second to set up a potential double Ferrari podium when Red Bull’s Perez attempted to reclaim his position behind him.
However, as the Mexican moved to the right coming into turn 2, Sainz simultaneously veered in the other direction and they touched.
The two cars were sent flying into the barrier on the opposite side of the track, bringing out the safety car to finish the race.
“What the f*** is he doing, man? What the f***? Is he crazy, or what? F****** idiot,” raged Perez on his team radio.
Sainz said via his radio: “What happened there? What happened?”
The Spaniard’s engineer asked him: “Are you okay?”, to which he replied: “Yes, but I don’t get it…”
The crash between Sainz and Perez was later shown in the drivers’ cooldown room for the three podium finishers.

Leclerc clapped his hands to his mouth as he watched his teammates collision, with Piastri keeping things much lighter.
The Australian joked, ‘They haven’t been great friends this weekend’, referencing their multiple scraps since arriving in Baku.
Both Sainz and Perez will be forced to visit the stewards together following two separate blocking incidents during practice sessions.
Their crash opened the door for Mercedes man George Russell to clinch a surprise third-placed finish to round out the podium.
Lando Norris was rewarded for an impressive recovery drive after starting P15 with a two-place bump from sixth to fourth.
That was one spot above championship rival Max Verstappen, as the Dutchman’s lead was cut by four points with the Brit’s fastest lap.
Elsewhere, there were also points for British rookie Ollie Bearman, who became the first-ever F1 driver to score points for two different teams in his first two races after filling in for Haas’ Kevin Magnussen to end P10.
