ICC Challenge League B | Second Round

  • Uganda 148 all out
  • Tanzania 89 all out
  • Uganda won by 59 runs

Cricket Cranes nearly stumbled in their final game of the second round of the Challenge League after a hard-fought win against their East African neighbours Tanzania.

On a very lively wicket, Tanzania won the toss and stuck in the Cricket Cranes. Ally Kimote (4/20) and Khalidy Juma (1/30) exploited the conditions very well to reduce the favourites to 40/4 before Fred Achellam (21) and Dinesh Nakrani (23) combined with the on-form Raghav Dhawan (63) to move the total to a respectable figure.

Uganda finished on a below-par 148 inside 42 overs.

In the run chase, Juma Miyagi produced his best bowling figures in List A cricket with a devastating fast bowling spell of 6/17 as Uganda ripped through Tanzania.

Cosmas Kyebuta and Juma Miyagi

There was very little resistance from the Tanzanians as the four fast bowlers combined to pick up all the 10 wickets with Cosmas Kyewuta (2/17), Dinesh Nakrani (1/20) and Bilal Hassun (1/23) backing up Miyagi. Uganda run away winners by 59 runs but not a very comfortable win by all margins.

Uganda finished strong after the second and picked a grip on their top spot four points ahead of Italy who have played a game less. Uganda also matched the results of the first round with four wins and a draw away from home which means that if they can win four games in the final round they should progress to the next round of the qualifiers.

Dhawan after a terrible start to his Cricket Cranes career has been outstanding in this second leg with four half centuries and his runs bailing out Uganda in all four wins.

Alpesh Ramjani had good all-round performances that earned him a player of the match award in the win against Singapore but the two fast bowlers Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta were outstanding with the ball as predicted and their staying fit helped the team to come out on top.

Captain Riazat Ali Shah who is usually the man for the crisis for Uganda had a quiet tournament by his standards but, nonetheless, made some contributions.

The Cricket Cranes for now will pause the 50-Over games and try and focus on the T20 Africa Finals in September as they try to qualify for a second T20 World Cup in a row.
