Daniel Dubois’ trainer Don Charles believes retirement talk regarding Anthony Joshua is premature.

Joshua was brutally beaten by underdog Dubois in stunning fashion at Wembley Stadium, being dropped for a fourth time in the fifth round which halted the contest.

After the fight, the 34-year-old insisted he still had more to give in the sport, and still has a contract remaining with Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh.

Charles has opened the door to a second meeting, and believes it would be a fool’s decision to write Joshua off.

“Look if that is the case [a rematch is made], arrogance is a disease and I don’t suffer from that,” Charles told talkSPORT’s Jim White & Simon Jordan.

“Obviously if there’s a rematch it is a serious fight, and Anthony Joshua is a serious fighter.

“We can’t be complacent and a wounded animal is at it’s most dangerous.

“So if there is a rematch you have to take it seriously and treat i as i9f its round one again.”

On calls for Joshua to potentially hang up his gloves, he added: “A lot of people are quick to tell people who have had a bad day to retire.

“It’s easy to say but this young man Anthony Joshua here has completely transcended boxing.

“He has done so much for boxing and it should be celebrated, but if it is his decision then it is his own decision.

“But no why should he retire? He was simply beaten by the better fighter.”

Charles has hit back at Joshua’s critics

Many senior figures in the boxing world questioned if it was Joshua’s last fight including Prince Naseem Hamed.

But AJ has vowed to continue fighting and is confident there are still options for him.

Eddie Hearn suggested Joshua could look to an immediate sequel against Dubois.

Frank Warren has even refused to rule out a potential shot against Tyson Fury, after he rematches Oleksandr Usyk on December 21.

Simon Jordan, talkSPORT boxing pundit has suggested Joshua will not want to retire with his legacy ‘in tatters’.

“AJ went into a ring in front of 96,000 people with a British heavyweight and got battered,” he said in a brutal assessment.

“And that is the legacy that Anthony Joshua will have to look behind in his rear-view mirror and wonder if that is the lasting image.

“Because that will be the lasting image. He can look at his bank balance and okay whatever.

“He’s gone in there and disappointed himself beyond belief and those around him I suspect.

“That’s why I don’t think he retires because I don’t know if he’d be able to live with himself.”
