Beckham was part of the famous Class of 92 at Premier League giants Manchester United, with whom he won six titles.

He was also part of their treble-winning team in 1999, and earned 115 caps for the England national team, whom he captained for over five years.

The 50-year-old was honoured as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire [OBE] by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2003.

And The Sun have now reported that Beckham will be knighted by King Charles III.

He is set to be named in the King’s Birthday Honours list next week.

The footballing icon will now become Sir David Beckham, and his wife Victoria will now be known as Lady Beckham.

One of his most famous moments on the football pitch was a free-kick scored against Greece in 2001 to send England to the World Cup.

A television commentator helped bring the enormity of the goal to life and hinted that he was worthy of being knighted afterwards.

“We’ve played two-and-a-half minutes of stoppage-time, England trail by two goals to one.

“Beckham could raise the roof here with a goal… I don’t believe it! David Beckham scores the goal to take England all the way to the World Cup finals!

“Give that man a knighthood!”

He joins an exclusive list of sports stars, including the likes of the late Sir Bobby Charlton and legendary Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as well as Liverpool legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Beckham played for United from 1992 to 2003 before he signed for Spanish giants Real Madrid.

He then made a statement move to Major League Soccer with LA Galaxy in 2007, with two loan spells at AC Milan coming in his five-year spell.

It was at Paris Saint-Germain where Beckham played his last ever game in football ahead of his retirement in 2013.

As well as a stellar football career, Beckham is known for being thrust into the limelight from a young age and has still maintained his celebrity status 12 years on from when he retired from playing.

Beckham has remained involved in football since hanging up his boots and is currently a co-owner at Inter Miami.

He oversaw the arrival of fellow legend Lionel Messi in 2023, with the MLS outfit winning their first ever trophy in the same year.
