For a long time, domestic violence cases in homes have happened across the world in different families.
Many have resulted in fatalities whilst others have left dark marks on people’s lives.
Fresh from the 2024 Olympic Games in France, Uganda’s long-distance female athlete, Rebecca “Becky” Cheptegei is a victim.
The 33-year-old who participated in the 10,000M and women’s marathon in Paris is currently in hospital, in Trans Nzoia county, Kenya.
This followed a domestic brawl with the boyfriend, Nickson Ndiema who allegedly poured petrol on the Olympian before lighting a fire in Endebess residence.
Both Cheptegei and Ndiema sustained deep burns and were initially taken to Kitale Level Four Hospital.
Later on, the duo was transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town due to the severity of the injuries suffered.
Cheptegei completed the women’s marathon in the 44th position with a timing of 2:32:14, while her compatriots Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat finished 8th and 69th respectively.
Last year, Chepetegi clinched silver at the Padova women’s marathon in Italy.
Messages of sympathy have been sent to the immediate family of Cheptegei and the Uganda Athletics Federation.
Dr Donald Rukare, president of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) condemned the act of violence against Cheptegei and other women personalities.
“Our Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei was viciously attacked by her boyfriend, sustaining serious burns. Currently admitted in hospital. Let’s keep Rebecca in prayer and wish her a full recovery. Let’s all say NO to violence, especially against women. This is totally unacceptable and we condemn this totally uncalled-for attack. Together let’s stand against violence,” Dr. Rukare castigated in a viral tweet.
