England women return to action tonight for the final home game of their Nations League campaign needing a win which would leave them heading into a decider against Spain in Barcelona on Tuesday night for a place in the semi finals.

Sarina Wiegman’s side last outing in early April saw them fall to a surprise 3-2 defeat at Leuven against Belgium which saw the reigning European champions lose their control of the group they seized after their 1-0 win over Spain in February.

With only the first placed team in the group progressing to the final four, England will have to win both of their final two matches of the campaign over the next five days, including an away game against the world champions next week, to be certain of securing their place in the two legged semi finals in October.

The Lionesses head into tonight’s bout having lost just one of their last seven games, and unbeaten in their last five home games.

Portugal were unbeaten in all competitions since 2023 prior to their double header against Spain last month, which saw them lose both games by a combined scoreline of 11-3, including a 7-1 defeat in Vigo.

Francisco Neto, in his 11th year as manager, had his side 14 matches unbeaten, a run which included taking four points from their opening two matches of this Nations League campaign, which currently has them in third place, though know a win at Wembley tonight would take them above England and into second place.

England head into tonight’s bout with Portugal as heavy favourites for victory which should set up a winner takes all clash against Spain in Barcelona on Tuesday night in a bid to finish top of Group C and book their place in the Nations League semi finals.

A 3-0 home win for the Lionesses seems a realistic shout.
