Everton v Newcastle preview

Newcastle got back to winning ways on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory in their rearranged Carabao Cup third round tie over Wimbledon at St James’ Park, with the match having been delayed a week and the venue switched after flooding at Wimbledon’s stadium.

Eddie Howe’s side had previously gone two matches without a win following a three game win streak, losing their unbeaten record this season with a 3-1 defeat at Fulham a fortnight ago before earning a 1-1 draw against four-time defending champions Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime.

The Magpies had sat as high as third in the Premier League table a few weeks ago after picking up 10 points from their first four games of the season, but the Tyneside club now head to Merseyside in seventh place, though still only two points off the top four.

Last weekend saw Everton pick up their first victory of the Premier League season after coming from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace, lifting them out of the relegation zone and no doubt adding a big boost of confidence after a tough start to the campaign.

Sean Dyche’s side had lost their opening four matches of the season, conceding at least three goals on each occasion and even giving up 2-0 leads in two of the games, but appear to have turned their fortunes around after picking up four points from their last two outings.

The Toffees will be hoping that their last two results are a sign of things to come as their fixtures, on paper at least, start to look a lot kinder after this weekend’s match, which they will back themselves to get a positive result out of in front of their home faithful.

Everton managed to take four points from their fixtures against Newcastle last season, ending a run of five defeats in their previous six games against the Magpies, earning a 3-0 win in this fixture last time out.

Dyche holds the better of the head-to-head record against Howe in previous battles between the two English managers, leading 8-4 in wins across their 16 meetings, though two of Howe’s victories have come in the last four.

Parimatch have are offering a tempting looking price of 5/1 on over 2.5 goals, both teams to score, Magpies’ top scorer Harvey Barnes to score and Toffees’ top scorer Dwight McNeil to have a shot on target.
