Everton vs Crystal Palace predictions

Everton fans have not had much to cheer about in recent weeks, but by those low standards the last few days have been pretty positive at Goodison Park.

First came the avoidance of defeat in the Premier League on Saturday, as Everton picked up their first point of the campaign and moved off the foot of the table in the process.

Iliman Ndiaye gave Everton the lead at Leicester City, before Stephy Mavididi notched an equaliser in the 73rd minute.

A point apiece was a fair outcome, and although Everton will be disappointed that they squandered a lead for the third league game on the bounce, they did at least depart with something.

On Monday came an even more positive development. The Friedkin Group, which had previously walked away from negotiations to buy the club, is now on the verge of completing a takeover at Goodison.

Dan Friedkin, an American billionaire, has struck an agreement with Farhad Moshiri and hopes are high that a deal can go through before the January transfer window.

To add a further subplot to this game, Crystal Palace co-owner John Textor appeared to be in pole position to buy Everton, but his failure to sell his stake in the Eagles (Premier League rules forbid shareholders from being involved at more than one club) allowed Friedkin to steal in.

Of course, the mood around the club will only truly begin to lift when Everton get their first victory of 2024/25 on the board.

They will be hoping that it comes against Crystal Palace, but they too are desperate to pick up all three points for the first time this term.

Palace have drawn their last three games, holding Chelsea, Leicester and Manchester United. Two of those draws can be seen as good results, but the Eagles were frustrated by their failure to beat Leicester.

Things are not clicking for Oliver Glasner right now, but the Palace manager has at least been proactive in seeking solutions. His substitutions gave his team a foothold in the last 30 minutes against United, for instance.

Will one of these two teams end their winless run on Saturday?

Everton vs Crystal Palace betting tips

Both Everton and Crystal Palace need a win as the Premier League returns this weekend.

Draw

Ultimately we believe both sides will be disappointed as they bid to pick up all three points on Merseyside.

Everton showed signs of going back to basics last time out. That is understandable given they had been defensively suspect in their first four matches, shipping a league-high 13 goals in that time.

Sean Dyche will promote similar qualities here. Everton will be happy to give up the ball at times and they will concentrate on setting up in a compact structure out of possession.

Crosses into the box will be a key part of their attacking strategy and they should have some joy up against an unsettled Palace backline.

But although they are yet to hit their stride this season, Glasner’s men have enough quality to avoid defeat for a fourth game in a row.

Under 2.5 goals

This looks set to be a scrappy encounter. That does not mean it will not be an engaging watch, but fans of free-flowing football should probably look elsewhere on Saturday afternoon.

Everton will make it their objective to disrupt Crystal Palace’s flow, in particular by shutting down Ebere Eze.

Having ended 2023/24 playing some excellent attacking football, Palace have only scored more than once in one of their five games up to now.

The loss of Michael Olise has not helped, while Glasner’s teams in Germany had a reputation for starting slowly.

Goals could be at a premium in this one.

Eddie Nketiah to score any time

Eddie Nketiah opened his Crystal Palace account in the EFL Cup last week, and he is now looking for his first Premier League goal at his new club.

Glasner used Nketiah and Jean-Philippe Mateta in the same XI against Leicester and Manchester United, but it did not really work on either occasion. Indeed, Palace only livened up against United once Mateta had been withdrawn.

Nketiah does his best work through the middle but he has been shunted out wide of late. Mateta, who does not look at his sharpest after a summer of Olympic football, could be given a rest this weekend.

That would leave the stage clear for Nketiah to lead the Palace line. The former Arsenal man will be keen to make the most of that opportunity.
