Manchester City turned on the style last weekend, coming from two goals down to beat Crystal Palace 5-2. Pep Guardiola’s side are now favourites to finish fourth as they seek a place in the Champions League.

The job is not done yet, though, and a trip to Everton represents a potential banana skin. Who will come out on top at Goodison Park?

Everton vs Manchester City predictions

Manchester City were back to their best for the last 60 minutes of their clash with Crystal Palace last weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side went 2-0 down to their in-form opponents, who had a third ‘goal’ disallowed by VAR. Palace ran riot early on and they might easily have been out of sight by the time City belatedly got their act together.

Still, it was impossible to not be impressed by the champions’ response. Kevin De Bruyne, the game’s outstanding player, halved the deficit in the 33rd minute, before Omar Marmoush restored parity soon after.

City went 3-2 up early in the second period via Mateo Kovacic, after which academy products James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly added their names to the scoresheet and condemned Palace to defeat.

It was City’s best performance for some time, although it would be a mistake to assert that all their problems are firmly behind them.

It has been said several times this season that City have turned a corner, only for Guardiola’s team to discover it was into a cul-de-sac.

Ever since City’s form fell off a cliff in November, they have struggled for consistency. This is a side that has won back-to-back league games just once in the last five and a half months.

The manager, for one, will not be getting ahead of himself. City are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification which will see two of themselves, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Aston Villa fail.

Despite that handsome triumph over Palace last time out, City are only just inside the top five. Chelsea and Villa are each a point behind them, so there is little margin for error.

“It’s better to have five teams [in the Champions League] instead of four,” Guardiola said last weekend.

“There are seven or eight contenders. This is the situation but there are lots of contenders. It will be [alive] until the last moment.”

Everton have little to play for in the final weeks of 2024/25, but that is not a bad thing. When David Moyes returned for a second spell at the helm in January, it looked like the Toffees’ survival battle would also go down to the wire.

Instead, Everton are 13th and safe already. That makes them potentially dangerous opponents for City.

Everton vs Manchester City betting tips

Everton host Manchester City at Goodison Park in an important game for the champions.

Manchester City to win

Everton only have three more games left at Goodison Park, the club’s home since 1892. Their supporters will cherish every minute that remains.

If Manchester City are to emerge victorious on Saturday, they will have to work hard for it.

No team in the division has lost fewer matches in their last 12 than Everton, whose only defeat since mid-January was a slender 1-0 reverse against Liverpool.

Moyes’ men are difficult to play against, especially at Goodison, and City will need to match their fight and desire.

Provided they can do that, City’s superior individual quality should make the difference, as it did against Crystal Palace.

⚽ Back Manchester City to win at 9/10 with NetBet ⚽

Over 2.5 goals

There has been an average of just 2.25 goals per game in Everton’s matches this season. That is the lowest such figure in the Premier League.

Manchester City’s fixtures have been more entertaining, featuring 3.25 goals every 90 minutes.

Only contests involving Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers have been more eventful by that measure.

City’s defence continues to look vulnerable, while Everton have scored in each of their last six league games in front of their own fans.

If the hosts do find the back of the net as we expect them to, City would need to score twice to win.

Kevin De Bruyne to score any time

De Bruyne, who will bid farewell to Manchester City at the end of the campaign, rolled back the years at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.

He scored City’s first with an excellent free-kick and went on to provide an assist in that 5-2 triumph over Crystal Palace, as well as creating several more chances.

De Bruyne has been used more sparingly by Guardiola this season, but it would be a brave move to drop him after his display last time out.

The Belgium international might be past his best but he remains a fantastic player on his day.

De Bruyne looks like good value to make the net bulge this weekend.
