Spencer spent five years at Elland Road, featuring for both the under-18 and under-21 sides during his time with the club.

However, he has been forced to hang up his boots due to a ‘cardiac problem’.

Sharing a series of snaps from his career to Instagram, Spencer wrote: “Heartbroken to be saying this. I will be retiring from professional football due to a cardiac problem I can’t carry on with.

“All I’ve ever known is to kick a ball and I have learnt everything from the game. I’m thankful and proud of what I have achieved.

“I will never forget the memories I have and have created along an amazing journey.

“Football is in my DNA and I will continue to support everyone who helped me along the way.

“I want to thank everyone who has stuck with me during this tough period and everyone who has helped me during my career.”

A number of former team-mates sent well wishes in the comments section underneath the post.

Tottenham’s Archie Gray wrote: “All the best mate,” as he showed his support for his friend.

Spencer and Gray featured together 13 times for Leeds’ under-18 and under-21 teams.

The latter went on to make 52 first-team appearances for his boyhood club before joining Spurs for £40million last summer.

Meanwhile, Crysencio Summerville added a heart and praying emoji.

Former Leeds defender Ian Harte also commented, writing: “Gutted for you Morten! Stay strong.”

Primarily a midfielder, Spencer also featured in central defence during his career.

The youngster started out in Sunderland’s academy before joining Leeds as a 15-year-old in 2019.

He would also go on to become a youth international with caps for both England and Norway’s age group sides.
