Express FC earned bragging rights in the Kampala derby after overcoming eternal rivals SC Villa on Friday at Nakivubo Stadium.

The closely contested encounter ended 1-0 in favor of the Red Eagles courtesy of a late goal from defender Joseph Zziwa.

SC Villa started the better side especially in the first half but the home side returned stronger after recess and eventually found the winner in the 79th minute.

The incosistence for SC Villa this season was at play again today. For a team that dispatched UPDF FC 5-0 last week, they failed to find an outlet against Express FC.

Express FC interim coach Badru Kaddu reacted to what SC Villa played and read the game well.

Villa who always thrive on pace up front failed to find spaces on a smaller Nakivubo pitch and the wingers in Hakim Kiwanuka and Reagan Mpande failed to make inroads at goal.

In the 23rd minute, goalkeeper Norman Angufindru sustained an injury and was replaced by Jeans Braddy Wokorach.

At the stroke of halftime, Charles Lwanga had a glorious effort to put Villa in the lead but was selfish and chose to go for glory rather than laying up his teammates.

In the second half, Express improved a lot and dominated proceedings with Saidi Kyeyune and Emmanuel Wasswa doing well in midfield.

When SC Villa coach Morley Byekwaso opted to bring on Isaac Mpagi and Johnson Ssenyonga, Express on the other hand brought on Daniel Shabene to stuffle the midfield.

The move worked well for the Red Eagles with Villa struggling to create chances in the final third.

The decisive moment came in the 79th minute with Zziwa finishing from close range after Ronald Ssekiganda failed to clear the ball away.

Saidi Kyeyune started a short corner to John Asiimwe who returned the ball to the former and weighed in a cross with the outside of his right boot. SC Villa captain Ssekiganda attempted to clear the ball away but instead laid it for Zziwa who drilled home to send Express FC fans into celebrations.

The win takes Express FC to fourth place on 12 points while SC Villa drop to 7th place on 11 points.
