Express FC put up a remarkable performance to overcome city rivals KCCA FC in the Kampala derby played on Saturday at MTN-Omondi Stadium.

The Red Eagles dug deep to edge KCCA FC 1-0 in a closely contested encounter courtesy of captain Emmanuel Wasswa.

The former KCCA FC midfielder struck home at the half hour mark thanks to Richard Basangwa who made the donkey work to tee up the former.

KCCA FC had a relatively positive start and Sadat Anaku had an attempt at goal in the 9th minute but his headed effort went wide.

Even when Express FC took the lead, Mustafa Mujuzi tested the visitor’s goalkeeper Emmanuel Kalyowa three minutes later from a free kick but the latter stood tall to deny him.

KCCA FC made changes at the start of the second half, seeking to level matters. Haruna Lukwago and Ashraf Mugume replaced Isa Mubiru and Bright Anukani respectively.

There were further changes for the hosts with Etienne Katenga, Steven Munguchi and Sharifu Ssengendo replacing Usama Arafat, Saidi Mayanja and Shafik Nana Kwikiriza in that order.

Express too made changes with goal scorer Wasswa going off injured in the 65th minute and replaced by Daniel Shabene.

Alpha Ssali and John Asiimwe had earlier paved way for Edward Ssebandeke and Geoffrey Gaganga respectively.

Express FC remained resilient in the closing stages to claim all three points and the city bragging rights.

The result means KCCA FC are winless in four games in a row and drop to fourth place on 19 points.

Express FC on the other hand move to third place on the same number of points but are a position ahead due to head to head.

The two teams will return to action next week with KCCA FC visiting Wakiso Giants FC while Express FC will be at home to URA FC.
