Fenerbahce vs Rangers predictions

Rangers reached the final of the Europa League in 2022. They were a penalty shoot-out away from lifting the trophy, which was ultimately scooped by Eintracht Frankfurt because of Aaron Ramsey’s fateful miss from 12 yards.

It is hard to see the Scottish giants repeating the feat this term. Rangers are in a state of flux right now, waiting for a takeover to go through and with an interim manager calling the shots from the touchline.

Barry Ferguson will be in charge for the remainder of the campaign. The former Rangers midfielder has stepped in after Philippe Clement was given the heave-ho a fortnight ago.

There was a debate about Clement’s future as far ago as last season. He then came under heavier pressure after Rangers in effect dropped out of the Premiership title race early on by dropping points in four of their first 10 matches.

Rangers’ record in the Europa League arguably kept Clement in the job. He guided the team to an eighth-place finish in the league phase, allowing the Gers to bypass the play-offs and go straight through to the round of 16.

Domestically, though, things went from bad to worse. A shock 1-0 home defeat by Queen’s Park sent Rangers crashing out of the Scottish Cup, while a 2-0 league loss to St Mirren proved to be the final straw for Clement.

There has been talk of a possible return to the Ibrox dugout for Steven Gerrard, but a decision will not be made until the 49ers Enterprises completes its takeover of the club. Ferguson has the job until the summer and his next task is to try and mastermind a win in Istanbul on Thursday.

Fenerbahce are hoping that Jose Mourinho’s record in knockout European football brings them a first ever continental trophy this term. They have never gone past the semi-finals of the Europa League, but with Mourinho at the helm Fenerbahce believe anything is possible.

They were inconsistent in the league phase, however, winning just two of their eight games and only scraping into the play-offs in 24th place, the final qualification berth.

Mourinho’s men did run out comfortable 5-2 winners against Anderlecht in the play-offs, though, so perhaps they are starting to hit their stride at the optimal time.

Fenerbahce vs Rangers betting tips

Can Rangers get a result in a hostile atmosphere in Istanbul on Thursday night?

Fenerbahce to win

Ibrox is home to one of the most hostile atmospheres in European football, but the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium could give it a run for its money.

It is not hard to see both legs of this last-16 clash being won by the home team, so the margin of victory could be all-important.

Rangers have struggled on their travels for much of 2024/25. They have failed to win a majority of their away games in the Premiership, although they did have a better record on the road in the league phase of this competition.

Mourinho’s best days are behind him (he would not be managing in Turkey if they were not), but he still has something about him in Europe.

Fenerbahce should be able to establish a first-leg lead on Thursday.

⚽ Back Fenerbahce to win at 8/13 with BetMGM ⚽

Under 2.5 goals

Ferguson will have spent the last few days preaching the importance of keeping things tight at the back.

Rangers must not let this tie get away from them. The Sukru Saracoglu Stadium is one of those places where you can quickly find yourself 3-0 down if the home team is on song.

Rangers must be resolute. They need to find a way to take the sting out of the crowd. And they must remember this is only the first instalment of a two-legged tie.

Ferguson would obviously love to see his team triumph in Turkey, but a narrow defeat would not be a disaster.

Given Mourinho’s own tendency towards caution, this looks set to be a low-scoring encounter.

⚽ Tip under 2.5 goals at 6/5 with Paddy Power ⚽

Edin Dzeko to score any time

Fenerbahce’s bid for Europa League glory is being spearheaded by Edin Dzeko and Youssef En-Nesyri.

En-Nesyri has scored 24 goals in all competitions this term, while Dzeko has chipped in with 19.

With Dusan Tadic pulling the strings behind that duo, Fenerbahce are not short of attacking quality.

At the age of 38, Dzeko is having his minutes managed carefully by Mourinho. But there is little chance of the former Manchester City man being left out here.

Rangers will have to be extremely wary of Dzeko whenever the ball reaches him inside the box. He is not as mobile as he once was, but the experienced centre-forward is still a master at finding space inside the area.
