Seven-time champions of Europe, AC Milan are the second-most successful side in the history of this competition. In recent times, though, they have struggled to reach the latter stages of the Champions League.

Milan were semi-finalists the season before last, but they were comfortably beaten by their rivals Inter over two legs.

That is the only occasion since their last triumph in 2007 that the Rossoneri have reached the final four, while they have participated in the quarter-finals only once more in that time.

The big two in Spain, Real Madrid and Barcelona, are still able to compete financially, as are German giants Bayern Munich and perennial French champions Paris Saint-Germain. For the rest it has become harder and harder to keep up.

Having said that, Italian teams have still reached the Champions League final. Inter did so in 2023, as did Juventus in 2015 and 2017.

Milan have had their own problems to deal with. There were ownership issues for much of the 2010s, while the club has also fallen foul of UEFA’s financial regulations on occasion.

Milan are still a massive name in European football, but they no longer begin each season as one of the favourites to win the Champions League. In fact, they are not even guaranteed a place in the competition year in, year out.

This very campaign, Milan are struggling in Serie A. They sit seventh in the standings at present, seven points adrift of the top four. Unless they win this year’s edition, Milan are likely to be absent from the Champions League in 2025/26.

We should not dismiss their chances of a deep run this time around. Milan will fancy their chances of overcoming Feyenoord over two legs.

The reward for that would be a meeting with Inter or Arsenal in the last 16. Milan would be underdogs against either opponent, but they would be free of pressure and would have nothing to lose.

Milan won three of their four home games in the first part of the competition, so Feyenoord probably need to triumph at De Kuip to stand a chance of advancing.

It is certainly possible that Feyenoord come out on top. They carry a genuine threat going forward and home advantage could be a factor.

Igor Paixao has been one of Feyenoord’s most important players in 2024/25.
