Feyenoord vs Inter predictions

Pascal Bosschaart spent just 12 days as Feyenoord’s interim manager last month. In that time he managed to mastermind a 2-1 aggregate victory over AC Milan in the Champions League play-offs.

Bosschaart also oversaw a 2-1 triumph over Almere City in the Eredivisie, yet all that was not enough to earn him a longer contract.

Instead, Feyenoord have hired Robin van Persie, who will take charge of his first ever match as a Champions League manager on Wednesday.

“With his enormous international experience, Robin can of course help the players develop further here,” said Feyenoord director Dennis te Kloese.

“His football vision also fits perfectly with what we have in mind at Feyenoord: attacking and refined football, combined with courage, intensity and fight.”

No pressure then. Van Persie was a fantastic player in his day, but it is fair to say his first managerial job at Heerenveen had its ups and downs. Van Persie won nine, drew six and lost 11 of his 26 games at the helm, and departed with Heerenveen ninth in the 18-team Eredivisie.

Feyenoord were held to a 0-0 draw by NEC Nijmegen in Van Persie’s first match in the dugout on Saturday, so there is room for improvement ahead of Inter’s visit.

The Nerazzurri were one of the standout teams in the league phase. They finished fourth with 19 points; only Liverpool in top spot accumulated more. Inter conceded just one goal in their eight games, by far the best defensive record in that part of the tournament.

Van Persie and his team have their work cut out, then. Feyenoord will hope that home advantage makes a difference, while they may also be helped by the fact that Inter were involved in an intense, competitive Serie A clash with fellow title contenders Napoli on Saturday.

The Dutch outfit also showed in the last round that they can spring a surprise against supposedly inferior Italian opposition.

The difference is, Inter are a significantly stronger side than their city rivals Milan at the moment. The bookies have Simone Inzaghi’s side down as strong favourites to advance to the quarter-finals, where one of Bayern Munich or Bayer Leverkusen awaits the winner of this tie.

Feyenoord vs Inter betting tips

Inter head to Rotterdam to face Feyenoord in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Inter to win

The Serie A title race could end up going down to the wire, with Inter, Napoli and Atalanta separated by just three points.

The underlying numbers suggest Inter are the best team in the division, but their two scudetto rivals are not involved in continental competition.

That does not mean Inter should sack the Champions League off, however. There is no reason why Inzaghi’s men cannot replicate their run to the final in 2023.

Feyenoord were hit and miss in the league phase. They beat Bayern Munich 3-0 and launched a stunning comeback to draw 3-3 with Manchester City, but they also lost 6-1 to Lille and went down to a 3-1 home defeat by Red Bull Salzburg.

And whereas Van Persie is still finding his feet at De Kuip, Inter are a well-oiled machine under Inzaghi, who has now been calling the shots for four years.

Inter clean sheet

Inter kept a remarkable seven clean sheets in the league phase, shutting out the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Monaco.

Bayer Leverkusen were the only team able to breach their backline, underlining the difficulty of the task facing Feyenoord here.

Inter do not give much away defensively. In each of their last nine domestic games, they have either conceded one or zero goals.

Feyenoord showed in the league phase that they pack a punch in attack when everything clicks, but Inter’s backline has kept out superior frontlines than the one at Van Persie’s disposal.

An Inter clean sheet is in the offing in Wednesday’s early kick-off in Rotterdam.

Lautaro Martinez to score any time

Van Persie started and ended his playing career at Feyenoord, a fact which doubtless played a big part in his appointment.

The former Arsenal and Manchester United frontman scored 46 times for the club across two spells, and a man of his striking credentials will be fully aware of the threat posed by Lautaro Martinez.

The Argentina international has had a mixed season so far. He started the campaign slowly and has suffered from occasional bouts of poor form since then.

Martinez recently went on a run in which he scored eight goals in nine matches, but his last six appearances have yielded a solitary strike.

Despite that, Martinez is a smart choice to find the net here given his propensity to come up big when Inter need him most.
