“Being the first Ugandan to do so is an incredible achievement and looking at my age right now (will be turning 40 in May), I can’t be prouder.

“And for me it is credible for a young boy who came from the streets of Nsambya to become who I am, play at the highest level of football I believe this will be a big inspiration to the youngsters out there never to give up and not to look at your age in terms of playing but performance.

“If you are doing well, it doesn’t matter how old or young you are but keep playing at the highest level. For me, it has been an incredible journey and I cherish it.”

The South African side, one of the four representing Africa alongside Al Ahly (Egypt), Esperance (Tunisia) and Wydad Casablanca (Morocco) are in group F with Borussia Dortmund (Germany), Fluminense (Brazil) and Ulsan HD (Korea) and Onyango expects a tough outing.

“Our group has strong teams and it is going to be a very difficult group for us but of course there are no easy games at the world cup as all are champions at their respective continents.”
