It’s all kicking off in Mexico with Spain international Sergio Canales needing medical treatment due to a training ground bust-up.

Canales’ Monterrey made headlines when they secured the mega signing of his former Real Madrid teammate, Sergio Ramos, in January but the midfielder did his best to regain the spotlight this week.

The LigaMX side released a statement on Friday morning, confirming elements of media reports that the ex-Madrid and Valencia prospect injured himself on a glass door.

They wrote: “We inform our fans and the media that this Thursday, April 3rd, player Sergio Canales received medical attention for injuries to his left leg after breaking a glass door when entering the locker room, following practice at the El Barrial Training Center.

“The player remained at rest for the rest of the day. The medical team will closely monitor Sergio to assess his recovery and his participation in the match this Saturday, April 5th.”

According to multiple reports in Mexico, the incident occurred when Canales kicked a glass door after arguing with manager and former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis.

The ex-Argentina international was asked what happened while leaving training in his car and said: “You can call it whatever you want. Call it a discussion. We’re open to whatever opinions the player wants to express.

“In every team, sport, and locker room, there’s an exchange of opinions. I’m not authoritarian. I like to listen and have the player give their opinions so I can draw the best conclusions.”

ESPN Mexico add that the manager and player had a ‘heated’ discussion in which Canales said the team wasn’t playing well and that Demichelis had left the squad exposed.

Defender Nelson Deossa intervened on the coach’s behalf before Canales left the session and took his anger out on some objects before damaging his leg.

The 34-year-old burst onto the scene in LaLiga for Racing Santander as a teenager back in 2009, scoring twice in style in his first start against Espanyol.

He followed that up with another double two games later against Sevilla, and soon every team in Spain was after his signature.

Madrid won that race before the season finished, but the transfer didn’t work out, with just 15 appearances before he became a LaLiga regular with Valencia, Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

In 2023 he made the move to Mexico and has been one of the league’s best players, helping Monterrey qualify for this summer’s expanded Club World Cup.

The club’s success saw them land Madrid legend Ramos in January, and the 39-year-old has set his sights on winning the revamped 32-team competition ahead of his old teams Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Getting off to a flyer with three straight goals after a scoreless debut, Ramos’ fifth match was marked with a red card, the 30th of his career.
