The Uganda Women’s National Basketball Team, the Gazelles, has secured a spot in the FIBA Zone V Women’s AfroBasket tournament after a commanding 74-63 victory over Egypt on Saturday evening at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall.

The game was closely contested in the first quarter, with Uganda edging ahead by a single point (19-18).

Jane Asinde set the pace early, scoring 10 points in the opening period.

Uganda tightened its defense in the second quarter, restricting Egypt to just 11 points while extending their lead to 11 points (40-29) by halftime.

The Gazelles’ zonal defensive strategy made it difficult for Egypt to penetrate the paint, with Jamila Nansikombi leading the charge by contributing seven points in the second quarter.

After the break, Uganda continued to dominate, stretching their advantage to 16 points (61-45) by the end of the third quarter.

Despite Egypt’s efforts to stage a comeback in the final period, the Gazelles held their ground to seal a well-deserved victory against the hosts.

Jane Asinde led Uganda’s scoring with an impressive double-double, recording 19 points and 12 rebounds.

On the other hand, Raneem Elgedawy (19 points), Reem Mousa (13 points), and Farida Abdelnabi (11 points) all scored in double figures for Egypt.

With this win, Uganda advances to the Women’s AfroBasket tournament, marking a significant achievement for Nicholas Natuhereza’s charges.
