Gazelles fall short against Egypt in Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers

Uganda’s Gazelles suffered a narrow 62-65 defeat to Egypt in the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Qualifiers at Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

Egypt started strong, establishing a nine-point lead (23-14) by the end of the first quarter.

However, Uganda responded well in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to just one point (32-33) at halftime.

After the break, Uganda struggled offensively, managing only nine points in the third quarter, allowing Egypt to extend their lead to five points (46-41) heading into the final period.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Uganda briefly took the lead (55-54) but soon found themselves over the foul limit.

Egypt capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, edging out Uganda 65-62 to secure a hard-fought victory in front of their home crowd.

Uganda’s scoring was led by Paige Robinson who netted 24 points, Jane Asinde added 18 points, and Hope Akello contributed 11 points.

Meanwhile, Nadine Mohamed (19 points) and Raneem Elgedawy (20 points) scored in double figures for Egypt.
