Two thrilling Nations League semi finals took place across Wednesday and Thursday night, which resulted in all-Iberian final with Spain and Portugal meeting in Munich on Sunday night which will leave one of them becoming the first nation to win multiple Nations League titles.
Before that though, the third place play-off must take place in Stuttgart earlier in the afternoon, with Germany and France battling it out for the bronze medal, after both falling agonisingly short in their respective semi finals.
Germany will head into Sunday afternoon’s bout as the slight favourites, perhaps aided by them having home advantage in front of their own fans, though that didn’t help on Wednesday night in Munich as they let a 1-0 lead slip to eventually fall 2-1 to Portugal.
Florian Wirtz’s goal early in the second half was cancelled out by goals from Francisco Conceicao and Cristiano Ronaldo in the space of five second half minutes to deliver Julian Nagelsmann his side’s first defeat since the Euro 2024 exit at the quarter final stage last summer.
This is guaranteed to be Germany’s best ever finish in a Nations League campaign having never reached the Finals before, but will be eager to finish the season on a high with victory over their noisy neighbours ahead of their World Cup qualifying campaign which commences in September.
Things were looking awfully messy for France in their semi-final with reigning European and defending Nations League champions Spain as the Spaniards took a 4-0 lead in Stuttgart just 10 minutes into the second half, but a rapid comeback left the French dreaming of the possibility of a mesmeric comeback.
The two sides exchanged goals to leave Didier Deschamps’ side with a 5-1 deficit but score three goals in the final 11 minutes to leave a frantic final couple of minutes before Michael Oliver brought the game to and end with Spain progressing 5-4 on the night.
France have now lost two of their last three games following their 2-0 defeat in Croatia in the first leg of their quarter final clash, which they eventually progressed through on penalties, but, like Germany, will be eager to get back to winning ways before World Cup qualifying starts for them in September.
Germany have won the last two meetings between the two sides, but both have been friendlies, their most recent coming in a 2-0 victory in Lyon in March last year, but are winless in their last five competitive matches against the French since knocking them out of the 2014 World Cup en route to lifting the trophy.
The last time the two sides met in a competitive match came in the group stage of Euro 2020 when a Mats Hummels own goal gave the French a 1-0 win.
