Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach won’t take place on December 14 as originally planned.
Last month, the WBA granted Roach special permission to move up and challenge Davis for his WBA lightweight title, whilst also retaining his WBA super-featherweight crown.
It was later confirmed the fight was set to be staged on December 14 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
However, boxing journalist Dan Rafael reports that the all-American showdown has now been pushed back to next year.
Davis has also verified this to be the case although he isn’t entirely sure when it will be rescheduled to.
Responding to a message from Rafael, he wrote: “January I’m hearing.”
It is presently unclear exactly why the fight has been postponed.
But there were suggestions it could have something to do with the venue.
Whether the fight takes place in Houston or elsewhere is yet to be seen at the time of writing.
There were reports that Davis vs Roach could be moved to share a show with the high stakes light-heavyweight bout between David Benavidez and David Morrell.
However, Rafael reports this is an ‘unlikely’ pairing.
Davis was elevated from ‘regular’ to full WBA world champion when Devin Haney relinquished the ‘super’ title in November last year.
He had held the lesser belt since 2019 but defended the full world title for the first time in June with an eighth round knockout win over Frank Martin.
Roach picked up the WBA super-featherweight strap by beating Hector Luis Garcia via split decision in November 2023.
He defended his title in June by stopping Feargal McCrory in the eighth round and is now set to move up to lightweight to challenge for a world title in a second weight class.
A fight between Davis and Vasyl Lomachenko was being explored earlier this year but negotiations collapsed after the Ukrainian opted to take some time away from the sport.
Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas insisted that his client ‘wasn’t in the mood to fight Davis right now’ and wouldn’t be returning to the ring until 2025.
As a result, Davis’ representatives turned their attention to Roach.
