England head into their final two Nations League matches needing maximum points to guarantee them a first place finish in Nations League B2, which would guarantee them automatic promotion back into the top tier of the next edition of the competition in two years’ time.
Tonight’s match will be Lee Carsley’s penultimate game in charge of the Three Lions in his interim spell as head coach following his promotion from the U21s after Gareth Southgate’s departure from the senior team after losing the Euro 2024 final.
The Irishman has won three of his four games in charge so far, but suffered a notable defeat at home against Greece last month, which leaves England needing victory in Athens tonight should they wish to avoid a two-legged promotion play-off against one of the third-placed teams from League A in March next year.
Meanwhile, Greece will be aware that a fifth consecutive victory for them in their capital tonight will see them reach League A for the first time with a game to spare, having only earned promotion from League C in the last Nations League campaign.
Ivan Jovanovic only took charge of this Greek team in the summer but has absolutely hit the ground running, winning his opening four matches in charge, including the nation’s first ever win over England at Wembley, conceding just one goal in the process.
The Serbian will be aware that even a draw would be enough to guarantee first place, as it would leave them with a superior head-to-head record with England despite the Three Lions being able to match their points total in Sunday’s final round of games.
Last month’s win at Wembley was Greece’s first ever victory over England in 10 attempts, though the Three Lions have won all four of their previous away games against the Mediterranean side, the most recent of which coming in 2002 World Cup qualifier, when second half goals from Paul Scholes and David Beckham earned a 2-0 win.
