Greece vs England predictions

Thomas Tuchel is the new manager of England, but not quite yet.

The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach will take over the national team in January, by which time the league phase of the Nations League will be over. Lee Carsley remains at the helm for the final two matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

The first of those is the key game for England. They lost 2-1 to Greece at Wembley Stadium last month, a result which has left them trailing their upcoming opponents in the table.

Head-to-head record takes precedence over overall goal difference when it comes to Nations League tiebreakers. That means England will only go top if they beat Greece by a two-goal margin on Thursday.

A draw or defeat would condemn the Three Lions to a second-place finish and end their hopes of automatic promotion.

That would be a disappointing outcome. The play-offs provide a second chance for group runners-up, but England were widely expected to make light work of this section.

Having to spend another campaign in League B would be a blow. The whole point of the Nations League is that it gives teams a chance to test themselves against similarly matched opponents in a competitive environment.

England would want to do that against the likes of Spain, Germany and France rather than teams like Finland, but they must first earn the right.

There was a feeling that a successful campaign would give Carsley a chance to land the England job permanently, but that is no longer an option. Even so, the Under-21 manager will be keen to make as positive an impression as possible in his final two games under the spotlight.

Lewis Hall and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were surprise call-ups to the squad for this week, while Curtis Jones is in line to make his senior debut after a strong start to the season for Liverpool. But John Stones, Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire are out through injury.

Carsley insists the personnel decisions were all his, but Tuchel will be watching on as he gets ready to inherit this group of players at the start of 2025.

Greece vs England betting tips

England will be looking to avenge last month’s defeat by Greece as the Nations League continues.

England to win

Greece were deserved winners at Wembley last month, while they have also managed to emerge victorious in their other three games in the group.

However, the fact that a draw would be enough for them to secure promotion could put the Greek players in two minds. There is greater clarity for England, who know this is win or bust.

Greece have shown over the last few months that they are a good side and should not be underestimated. Yet it remains true that England have much more talent at their disposal.

That does not guarantee anything in football, of course, but the Three Lions should come out on top if they play to their potential.

Carsley picked a bafflingly open line-up in the home game against Greece. Provided he corrects that mistake here, England can pick up all three points.

Both teams to score

If England had wrapped up promotion already, Carsley would probably have selected a more experimental squad for the final international break of the year. He might even have promoted a few more of his Under-21 charges.

As it is, the interim England boss will go with a strong XI for the clash at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

Whichever combination he picks, a pool of attackers which includes Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer, Phil Foden, Anthony Gordon and Jude Bellingham gives England a great chance of causing Greece a few problems going forward.

There are bigger doubts about the defence. Stones and Maguire are out, Kyle Walker is struggling for form, Marc Guehi has had a mixed start to the season, and the likes of Levi Colwill and Ezri Konsa are still relatively untested at international level.

Greece scored twice at Wembley and we expect them to make the net bulge on home turf too.

Harry Kane to score anytime

Harry Kane was not his usual self at Euro 2024. The England captain suffered an injury a few weeks before the tournament and he did not seem to be fully fit in Germany.

It is fair to say Kane is looking sharp again now. He has come flying out of the blocks for Bayern Munich, scoring 17 goals in his first 16 appearances this term.

Kane has not scored for England since the summer, so he will be keen to add to his national team record of 68 goals on Thursday.

Despite competition from the likes of Dominic Solanke and Ollie Watkins, Kane remains England’s main man up front.

The 31-year-old can serve up a reminder of that fact by notching against Greece.
