Harry Kane will place Tuesday night’s matchball in a special place at his home after breaking yet another goal scoring record.

The Bayern Munich striker became the highest scoring Englishman in the Champions League, eclipsing Wayne Rooney’s record of 30 goals.

Heading into Tuesday’s clash against Dinamo Zagreb, Kane required just one goal to equal Rooney’s tally but the England skipper went on to net four times as Bayern ran rampant 9-2.

Kane was delighted to have edged ahead of Rooney in the competition and was quick to honour the former Manchester United star after the final whistle.

He now has 33 goals in 45 games, passing Wayne Rooney’s old mark of 30 – and doing so in 40 games less.

The England captain and all-time leading scorer also became the first English player to score four goals in a single European Cup game since Alan Smith for Arsenal in 1991, as well as the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a Champions League or European Cup match.

“Whenever you’re in a conversation with Wayne Rooney, it means you’re doing something well,” Kane told Prime Video.

“He’s one of the greatest English players and one of the best players there was in the game. It’s a nice achievement.”

His four-goal haul saw him keep his cool to convert from the penalty spot three times during the match, a feat he has never achieved before.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever had three penalties in one game,” he added. “It was a different feeling for me, but to score four goals is fantastic.

“To help the team in any way possible is important. Whether they’re penalties or normal finishes, I’ll take them all. It was a great night for us.”

His heroics will be shared across the Kane household on Wednesday, it seems, with the striker revealing he will keep the ball in a special place.

Three-year-old son Louis is to become the beneficiary of his father’s latest matchball, which according to the striker, is starting to become a chore for his teammates.

“I keep all the balls after hat-tricks,” Kane said. “The lads might be sick of signing them, but keep them coming.

“My son Louis, he loves playing football right now. He’s only three, but I’ll take it home and put it next to his bed and he’ll be happy when he wakes up in the morning.”

Tuesday’s thrashing of Dinamo Zagreb capped off a prolific few days for the Bundesliga giants.

Saturday’s 6-1 league win at minnows Holstein Kiel coupled by their Champions League mauling saw Bayern net an incredible 15 goals in two games.

Vincent Kompany’s side were 3-0 up against the Croatian outfit at the interval thanks to goals from Kane, Raphael Guerreiro and Michael Olise.

Dinamo made a fist of it by scoring twice early in the second half but it only sought to anger the Germans who went into overdrive.

Kane hit a second-half hattrick before Olise netted his second and substitutes Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka got themselves on the scoresheet.

Kane said: “We’ve come back with good energy. We’ve been hungry. You saw that straight away in pre-season with the new coach. Everyone has a point to prove here and we’ve started the season that way.

“The way the coach wants us to press and be intense with and without the ball is important. We know we can dominate teams with the quality we have.”
