Harry Kane has become the subject of scathing criticism in the German media for his Bayern Munich performance against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga title rivals drew 1-1 on Saturday in a match that saw the England captain fail to score or assist for the first time all season.

Kane has netted an incredible 54 goals in 52 appearances for Bayern since his initial £86.4million from Tottenham last summer.

And despite coming off injured, his efforts in the home clash against Leverkusen have come under the spotlight in Germany.

In a recent article published by the newspaper BILD, reporter Walter M. Straten headlined a piece with ‘The BITTER Kane Truth’.

Straten listed five findings from the match, with his second reading: “Bayern were ahead in all important areas. Shots on goal, possession, tackles. Their performance was masterful.”

“But that brings us to…” he wrote at the end before his third finding in which Kane was scrutinised for not having a shot on target.

“Lots of effort, too little success,” Straten commented. “Harry Kane is hanging around alone up front.

“What good are three goals against Kiel if he doesn’t even get a shot on goal in a big game like yesterday?

“Fairness dictates that we shouldn’t unleash the Kane-can’t-win-a-title curse now. Especially since he had to leave injured.”

Straten was referring to Kane’s hat-trick in Bayern’s 6-1 thrashing of Bundelisga newcomers Holstein Kiel last month.

The 31-year-old has scored goals in league wins over SC Freiburg and Werder Bremen too, as well as netting four versus Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League and one against SSV Ulm 1846 in the DFB-Pokal.

Kane still boasts a hugely impressive scoring record at Bayern

However, Kane’s attacking presence at the weekend was a key issue for Straten, who also took aim at his inability to yet win a trophy.

Bayern celebrated an 11th consecutive Bundesliga title triumph and DFL-Supercup success in the season prior to the striker’s arrival.

There was a wide belief that Kane would inevitably win his first ever major honour in his debut season at the club but they failed to win a trophy for the first time since 2012.

Bayern’s fortunes could certainly change this season though if Kane maintains his world-class scoring ability.

However, it remains to be seen if he will feature in their next match on Wednesday against Aston Villa in the Champions League, live on talkSPORT, due to his ankle injury against Leverkusen.

In a statement, Bayern said: “Harry Kane suffered a painful blow to his ankle in Saturday’s top Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen 1-1.

“Examinations by FC Bayern’s medical department on Sunday showed a positive development. Kane will continue to receive intensive treatment.”
