Newmarket1.50 – Law Of Design each way

This race could be more wide-open than the market suggests, and although being pitched into deep waters on his third start, the Brian Meehan trained LAW OF DESIGN could be capable of causing an upset.

The Sottsass gelding finished third on debut at Newmarket on quick ground when looking a bit raw and unfurnished, but made late headway. It looked as though he was learning quickly on the job, and then demonstrated that next time out at Ascot on Soft ground, when he produced a very smart performance to see off his rivals – the form of which is working out well.

His jockey on that occasion, James Doyle, expressed in the post-race analysis how happy the horse was in the rain-soaked conditions, so there will be no excuses with the ground here today. On everything we have seen so far, the step up in trip to 1m can see him flourish and he could be capable of causing an upset with Sean Levey in the saddle.

Newmarket3.00 – Whistlejacket

It is hard to look past the claims of Prix Morny winner WHISTLEJACKET who has been in cracking form this season and should relish underfoot conditions. A winner of three of his six races, all three victories have come with plenty of cut underfoot, and the ground was Soft when landing the spoils in France last time out to bag his first Group 1.

For what they are worth, he has upwards of 7lb in hand over his rivals, and with trip and ground very much in his favour it is hard to find a fault with him. Ryan Moore is in the saddle for the Aidan O’Brien team, and gets the vote from me.

The biggest danger could come from Shadow Of Light, with the Charlie Appleby team in scintillating form. On pedigree he Godolphin representative should handle conditions, and was last seen when runner-up in the Gimcrack. He still retains plenty of potential and can get in the conversation at the business end of proceedings.

Newmarket3.40 – Dual Identity each way

DUAL IDENTITY is a fascinating contender in the Cambridgeshire where connections of 35 horses will be looking to get their hands on the £90k prize in a race that will take some getting with the ground likely to be riding on the slow side. The William Knight trained 6-year-old is floating high in the Handicap off a mark of 100, but Brandon Wilkie has been booked claiming 5lb, so in theory he is competitively treated coming into this assignment.

Moreover, when the ground gets very testing, being over analytical on weights can be an exhaustive process, as you just need an individual who is going to grind it out in conditions that will be an inconvenience to many. Dual Identity has winning form when the mud is flying, so he will be absolutely fine in this scenario, and we know the track holds no fears as he was third in this corresponding race 12 months on rattling quick ground.

Bopedro is another to take note of who looks dangerously well handicapped, but there is a question mark about his ability to perform to his best on a Soft surface.

Epsom 2.55 – Rickshaw

RICKSHAW makes appeal in this Novice Stakes over 10f for the Harry Charlton and James Doyle combination. The son of Cracksman didn’t race as 2-year-old, but made an eye-catching belated debut when third in a Pontefract Maiden recently, making some noticeable late headway from off the pace in that 1m event.

Underfoot conditions were very fast on that occasion, and pedigree offers plenty of encouragement that he will be able to handle what will more than likely be hock-deep conditions at Epsom, as the rains continue to batter many courses.

I can only see the extra 2f here being to his advantage and I like the claims of this combination with in-form handler Harry Charlton being amongst the winners lately.

Epsom 4.40 – Condor Pasa

I think that CONDOR PASA ticks a lot of the right boxes in this Class 4 Handicap over the extended 1m. The Roger Varian trained representative got off the mark at the fourth attempt when landing a Carlisle Maiden in testing ground back in June, but then subsequently disappointed on his latest start when down the field at Ascot.

However, the bare result doesn’t tell the full story, as he travelled very well for a long way, before it appeared that his stamina gave-way in that 10f assignment on a stiff track. There are a lot of factors that can see a major improvement here, most importantly, the drop down in distance which looks like a big tick in the box given he is not short of speed.

The hood goes on for the first time, he has eased 2lb in the weights, and a return to a testing surface will not be a hindrance. James Doyle takes the ride on this son of Siyouni, and a return to the winners’ enclosure would not be a surprise.
